Shelbey needs Brain Surgery

Donation protected
Hi, my name is Leonie,

I have set up this Go Fund Me account and fundraiser for my friend Tanya to help raise funds for her daughter Shelbey's brain surgery scheduled for 8th  September 2020 at Sunshine Coast Private Hospital.

ABOUT SHELBEY - PICTURED ABOVE

This is Tanya's beautiful 18yo daughter Shelbey.

Shelbey is a dancer and when not at Uni, she is a swimming instructor and teaches littles ones how to swim. She absolutely loves her job.

She is an active, fun loving girl whose ambition is to one day become an A & E doctor.

Her life's dream is to utilise this qualification to work and live on Mercy ships caring for, and providing medical assistance and supplies for the vulnerable, under privileged adults and children from third world countries.  Shelbey has just commenced her bachelor of nursing to begin this journey as a starting point.

After experiencing some severe migraines that would not abate, and suffering what appeared to be a minor stroke which affected the whole of her right side, they met with a doctor and took steps to investigate the cause.

MRI scans have aided the recent diagnosis of:

CHIARI MALFORMATION WITH SYRINX

This is a condition in which brain tissue extends into the spinal canal causing severe migraines, neck pain, numbness and tingling of her hands, sleep apnoea, pain across her shoulder blades, general body pain, ringing in her ears, blurred vision, anxiety, and problems with her memory and concentration.

In addition to this, Shelbey has Syrinx which is a build-up of spinal fluid below the brain, placing undue pressure on vital nerves at the base of her skull and back of her neck. If not operated on, this could eventually lead to loss of nerve function which will affect movement in particular the use of her hands, arms, legs and bladder function.

Her options are limited to:

Pain Relief long term and face the decline in nerve function of her hands, arms legs, and bladder function

OR

Undergo brain surgery to take the pressure off the nerves and hopefully preserve her health so that she can fulfil her dreams and lead a normal life.

Brain Surgery obviously carries its own risks – stroke during surgery, infections, meningitis, CSF leakage, excessive bleeding, paralysis, problems swallowing, abnormal eye movements etc.

After much deliberation, Shelbey has decided that brain surgery is the only way forward, despite the risks that would give her the best chance at a normal life.

Shelbey is scheduled for her brain surgery on 8th September 2020 at Sunshine Coast Private Hospital.

After her surgery she will require full time care and undergo intensive rehabilitation for 3 – 4 months.  During this time she will be completely dependent and for some weeks will not be able to drive. Tanya would like to care for her at home.

As you can imagine, this has the whole family in a tail spin with worry about how Shelbey will tolerate her brain surgery and what her recovery will be like. This is a huge mountain for an 18 year old to climb but together with community support we can help and journey with her.

To complicate matters, there is the financial strain of hefty out of pocket expenses that their health insurance will not cover.

When Tanya initially considered selling her business to fund the surgery (I suspect a knee jerk reaction, which I sensed she was feeling very apprehensive about), I suggested she instead press pause on her business and we start a Go Fund Me fundraiser as a means to ease this financial burden that they know is coming.

That way, Tanya and her husband Billy and the rest of the family can direct all their energies and efforts into supporting their daughter Shelbey through her brain surgery, rehab and recovery.

Out of pocket medical expenses:

(after medicare / private health insurance rebates):

Brain Surgery fee                 $7790

Anaesthetist                          $2500 - $3500 approx

Our fundraising goal is to reach $11 500 to cover all expected medical expenses.

The money raised is going towards paying the brain surgeon and anaesthetist. Fees will be payed directly to the surgeon and  anaesthetist prior to the 8th of September.

This will not include loss of business income for Tanya while she is not providing her dog grooming services (around 8k realistically) but would provide a huge financial relief for the family.

Tanya does not feel comfortable asking for financial help in this way, but I know that her loved ones and many other kind people out there might like to help out by sharing this link with their networks and or donating themselves.

Our aim is to take medical expense related financial pressure off Shelbey’s family to enable them to continue to pay for typical home / life related expenses and keep home life as normal as possible for Shelbey during this stressful time.

Due to an overwhelming response the Beeton family were advised to increase the required funding, to provide for the 4 months loss of income, for Shelbeys rehabilitation.

Thank you in advance for your generosity.

It will absolutely mean the world to Shelbey and her family.
