Hello and welcome to #TeamSheila!
Many of you may know my story but for those who don’t, I’d like to share. My life used to be as normal as any other 24 year old woman. I was out in D.C. for Spring Break and studying for midterms for law school. Everything around me seemed to change when I found out that I was diagnosed with Stage III Colon Cancer. I faced many hardships finishing my last semester of school while going through several doctor appointments to find a specialist and running several tests like CT scans, MRI’s, and blood tests. I had surgery to remove the tumor, and was told there was a 50% chance that I wouldn’t need chemo. However, the pathologists reports came back and 3 lymph nodes were positive, so now I am preparing for chemo treatments for the next 6 months.
These treatments are very expensive and consists of getting another procedure done that includes getting a port placed in my chest for all the medicine and blood work to be placed in or buying expensive pills that my insurance will not cover. I will need to go back to Duke every two to three weeks for the infusion. In addition to fighting cancer, I am also studying for the NC bar this summer to become a licensed attorney, and I am also trying to raise money for all of the out of pocket medical expenses. Not only will the chemo treatments be expensive, but I am also trying to bank my eggs in a fertility center, so that I can have children in the future. My insurance will not cover these costs, but having a future family is really important to me, so I am asking for YOUR help!
Many of you have asked me what you can do to help, and now I am asking you for your help with raising donations. I need to raise $15,000 by NEXT WEEK in order to start the procedure. The fertility procedure cannot be pushed back because every day that we wait to start chemo, the less effective it will be. So now I asking you to donate however much you can, and if you can’t donate please help me by spreading the word and sharing it on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, email, or texts. I’m going to keep fighting and now I need you on my team to help me fight this thing as well!
