Haitian Midwife Needs Heart Surgery

She has a big heart. I knew this by the way she treats our patients, the way she interacts with our other staff, and the way she offers a genuine smile to everyone who walks in the room. Judith has been working at our clinic for almost a year now. She was a godsend when I met her. For years I have been trying to find competent and compassionate Haitian midwives. Judith is more than I had ever hoped for. Her skills and abilities matched her passion for her work and compassion for the women and babies. She is everything a midwife should be.
Unfortunately, she literally does have an enlarging heart. Judith has had to quit work due to a worsening heart condition - an 'insufficient mitral prolapse' and the left part of her heart is growing. This condition requires a surgery that is not available in Haiti and it needs to happen soon. The good news is that cardiologists predict that the operation is likely to be successful and have a good outcome.
Judith works (well, worked and hopefully she will work again) at my birthing center in Jacmel, Haiti. Haiti has a high infant and maternal mortality rate and is in desperate need of midwives. Saving Judith's life now will save mothers and babies later.
Unfortunately, the organizations that help Haitians find free medical care in other countries have long waiting lists. Judith can't wait. She could die waiting. That's why we are asking for your help to raise enough money so we can pay for her heart operation and not have to be on the waiting list.
We have a hosptial and doctor in Colorado willing to do the operation at a VERY discounted rate. Normally it would cost around $100 000, but we are going to be able to get it done for under $40 000!!!!
Her heart is still beating, but time is ticking!
