Our daughter has fought for her life… and now we are fighting to protect the home and stability she needs.

Hello, my name is Amisabel Reyes Perez.

I am a mother, a wife, and a woman who refuses to give up.

My husband, Jorge J. Montanez Castro, and I are the parents and permanent legal guardians of a beautiful girl we call our “daughter of the heart” — a true warrior who came into our lives through the child welfare system and became our family.

We opened our hearts and our home because we wanted to give her the love, stability, and care she deserves. Even though we are not her biological parents, she is our daughter in every way that truly matters.

We do not usually share many details or images of her publicly because we deeply value her privacy, dignity, and safety. But today, we are sharing our story because our family needs help.

Our daughter’s medical journey

Our daughter is medically complex and requires full-time care.

She lives with several serious conditions, including microcephaly, Autism Spectrum Disorder, epilepsy, Wiedemann-Steiner Syndrome, and severe spastic cerebral palsy.

She also:

• Depends on oxygen
• Requires constant monitoring
• Takes multiple important medications
• Receives nutrition through a G-tube
• Faces respiratory, digestive, and urinary complications
• Experiences frequent medical challenges

Today:

• She uses a wheelchair
• She cannot speak
• She cannot walk
• She cannot hold objects
• She cannot care for herself
• She depends completely on us

Her care is 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

No breaks. No days off.

Everything she has overcome

Throughout her life, our daughter has faced many battles most people never see.

She has experienced:

• Respiratory crises
• Seizures
• Serious infections
• Long hospital stays
• Complex neurological episodes

She has needed multiple procedures, including:

• G-tube placements and changes
• Endoscopies and biopsies
• Vesicostomy surgery
• Complex sinus surgeries

None of these procedures were optional. They were necessary to protect her health, comfort, and quality of life.

How our family reached this point

For months, we tried to establish reliable 24-hour nursing care at home so my husband could continue working full-time with his CNA patients and I could work as well.

Because our daughter’s medical needs are so complex, finding and maintaining properly trained nursing support has been extremely difficult.

During that same period, I faced my own medical challenges. I suffered from kidney stones and a urinary tract infection that required surgery and a difficult recovery.

My husband continued doing everything he could — working, helping me recover, caring for our daughter, managing our home, and training caregivers.

We kept fighting because that is what parents do.

But everything changed after our daughter became seriously ill and required another hospitalization.

She faced a major medical crisis with respiratory complications, intubation, and procedures to remove fluid from her lungs.

There were moments when we feared we could lose her.

After leaving the hospital and continuing to search for the best care possible, our home nursing situation changed, leaving us without the support our family depended on.

Since then, we have been caring for her ourselves around the clock.

Our reality today

Every day is focused on keeping our daughter safe.

I care for her during the day, and my husband cares for her overnight while still trying to work whenever possible.

Because she requires constant care, our ability to work has been severely affected.

This has caused us to:

• Lose income
• Fall behind financially
• Struggle with our mortgage, vehicles, insurance, utilities, and basic needs

We are now facing the possibility of losing the stability we fought so hard to build for her.

Why we are asking for help

We know what it means to struggle. We have faced difficult seasons before, including instability, constant moves, and moments where we had to rebuild our lives from nothing.

But this situation is different.

Our daughter depends on medical equipment, routines, transportation, and a safe home environment.

Losing our home and vehicles would directly affect her care and the stability she needs.

We are not asking for luxury.

We are asking for:

• Time
• Stability
• A chance to recover financially
• The ability to continue caring for our daughter safely

Our message

Asking for help is one of the hardest things we have ever done.

We have always tried to be the ones who find solutions, keep going, and overcome every obstacle.

But right now, we need our community.

We believe our daughter came into our lives for a reason, and we will continue fighting for her every single day.

Mi esposo, Jorge J. Montanez Castro, y yo somos los padres y guardianes legales permanentes de una hermosa niña a quien llamamos nuestra “hija del corazón” — una verdadera guerrera que llegó a nuestras vidas a través del sistema de bienestar de menores y se convirtió en nuestra familia.

Abrimos nuestro corazón y nuestro hogar porque queríamos darle el amor, la estabilidad y el cuidado que ella merece. Aunque no somos sus padres biológicos, ella es nuestra hija en cada forma que realmente importa.

Normalmente no compartimos muchos detalles ni imágenes de ella públicamente porque valoramos profundamente su privacidad, dignidad y seguridad. Pero hoy decidimos compartir nuestra historia porque nuestra familia necesita ayuda.

El camino médico de nuestra hija

Nuestra hija es una paciente médicamente compleja y requiere cuidado completo.

Ella vive con varias condiciones severas, incluyendo microcefalia, trastorno del espectro autista, epilepsia, síndrome de Wiedemann-Steiner y parálisis cerebral espástica severa.

Además:

• Depende de oxígeno
• Necesita monitoreo constante
• Toma múltiples medicamentos importantes
• Recibe alimentación por G-tube (tubo gástrico)
• Tiene complicaciones respiratorias, digestivas y urinarias
• Enfrenta retos médicos frecuentes

Actualmente:

• Usa silla de ruedas
• No puede hablar
• No puede caminar
• No puede sostener objetos
• No puede cuidar de sí misma
• Depende completamente de nosotros

Su cuidado es 24 horas al día, los 7 días de la semana.

Sin pausas. Sin días libres.

Todo lo que ella ha superado

A través de su vida, nuestra hija ha enfrentado batallas que muchas personas nunca ven.

Ha pasado por:

• Crisis respiratorias
• Convulsiones
• Infecciones severas
• Largas hospitalizaciones
• Episodios neurológicos complejos

También ha necesitado múltiples procedimientos, incluyendo:

• Colocaciones y cambios de tubo gástrico
• Endoscopías y biopsias
• Cirugía de vesicostomía
• Cirugías complejas de los senos paranasales

Ninguno de estos procedimientos fue opcional. Fueron necesarios para proteger su salud, comodidad y calidad de vida.

Cómo nuestra familia llegó a esta situación

Durante meses intentamos establecer nuevamente un cuidado de enfermería confiable de 24 horas en el hogar para que mi esposo pudiera continuar trabajando a tiempo completo con sus pacientes como CNA y yo también pudiera trabajar.

Debido a lo complejo del caso médico de nuestra hija, encontrar y mantener personal de enfermería correctamente preparado ha sido extremadamente difícil.

Durante ese mismo tiempo, yo enfrenté mis propios problemas de salud. Sufrí de piedras en el riñón y una infección urinaria que requirió cirugía y una recuperación complicada.

Mi esposo continuó haciendo todo lo posible: trabajando, ayudándome en mi recuperación, cuidando de nuestra hija, encargándose del hogar y entrenando cuidadores.

Seguimos luchando porque eso es lo que hacen los padres.

Pero todo cambió cuando nuestra hija enfermó gravemente y necesitó otra hospitalización.

Ella enfrentó una crisis médica seria con complicaciones respiratorias, tuvo que ser intubada y necesitaron realizar procedimientos para remover líquido de sus pulmones.

Hubo momentos donde pensamos que podíamos perderla.

Después de salir del hospital y continuar buscando el mejor cuidado posible para ella, nuestra situación con la enfermería en el hogar cambió, dejándonos sin el apoyo del que nuestra familia dependía.

Desde entonces, hemos estado cuidándola nosotros mismos las 24 horas del día.

Nuestra realidad hoy

Cada día está enfocado en mantener segura a nuestra hija.

Yo la cuido durante el día, y mi esposo la cuida durante la noche mientras todavía intenta trabajar todo lo que puede.

Debido a que ella requiere cuidado constante, nuestra capacidad de trabajar se ha visto severamente afectada.

Esto nos ha llevado a:

• Perder ingresos
• Atrasarnos económicamente
• Luchar para cubrir la hipoteca, vehículos, seguros, servicios básicos y necesidades del día a día

Ahora enfrentamos la posibilidad de perder la estabilidad que con tanto esfuerzo construimos para ella.

Por qué estamos pidiendo ayuda

Sabemos lo que significa luchar. Hemos enfrentado temporadas difíciles antes, incluyendo inestabilidad, muchas mudanzas y momentos donde tuvimos que comenzar desde cero.

Pero esta situación es diferente.

Nuestra hija depende de equipo médico, rutinas, transportación y un ambiente seguro en el hogar.

Perder nuestra casa y nuestros vehículos afectaría directamente su cuidado y la estabilidad que ella necesita.

No estamos pidiendo lujos.

Estamos pidiendo:

• Tiempo
• Estabilidad
• Una oportunidad para recuperarnos económicamente
• Poder continuar cuidando a nuestra hija de manera segura

Nuestro mensaje

Pedir ayuda ha sido una de las cosas más difíciles que hemos tenido que hacer.

Siempre hemos tratado de ser quienes encuentran soluciones, quienes siguen adelante y superan cada obstáculo.

Pero en este momento necesitamos de nuestra comunidad.

Creemos que nuestra hija llegó a nuestras vidas por una razón, y seguiremos luchando por ella todos los días.
