Hallo, ik ben een onafhankelijke redder uit België en zorg momenteel voor een duif die besmet is met het paramyxovirus (PMV). Ondanks de ernst van het virus eet deze sterke duif goed en toont duidelijke tekenen van herstel.

In België worden duiven met PMV vaak geëuthanaseerd, zelfs wanneer ze met de juiste zorg een reële kans op herstel hebben. Ik heb ervoor gekozen om te helpen, omdat ik geloof dat elk leven een kans verdient. Met goede verzorging kan de viruslast dalen, waardoor het risico op besmetting voor andere duiven ook vermindert.

Vorige week ben ik naar Nederland gereisd om een gespecialiseerde duivendierenarts te raadplegen. Deze week staat een vervolgbezoek gepland. De vaccinatie was gelukkig gratis, maar de vervoerskosten vormen een uitdaging voor mij. Beide ritten samen kosten zo’n €70 en ik hoop dit bedrag in te zamelen om de reis mogelijk te maken.

Tijdens de reddingsactie viel mijn partner van een ladder en brak hun elleboog – allemaal tijdens de poging om deze duif te helpen. We doen wat we kunnen om deze dieren te verzorgen, ook als het systeem hen al heeft opgegeven.

Hello, I'm an independent rescuer based in Belgium, currently caring for a pigeon infected with paramyxovirus (PMV). Although the virus is serious, this resilient bird is still eating well and showing strong signs of recovery.

In Belgium, pigeons diagnosed with PMV are usually euthanized—even when they could survive with proper care. I've chosen to help because I believe in giving every life the chance it deserves. With careful treatment, the virus load can decrease, reducing the risk of transmission to others.

Last week, I traveled from Belgium to the Netherlands to meet with a specialized pigeon vet, and I plan to return this week for a follow-up. The vaccine itself was kindly offered free of charge, but covering transportation is a challenge for me financially. The combined cost of both trips comes to €70, and I’m hoping to raise just that amount to make it possible.

During the initial rescue, my partner was injured—falling from a ladder and fracturing their elbow while trying to help. We're doing our best to provide the care these birds need, even when the system gives up on them.
