Send Sharon to Alaska

"We wish to thank you for your patience as we make our decisions for residency positions at Chulitna Lodge for the summer of 2017.
We only have space for 15 residents and 3 fellows throughout the summer and have received over 200 applications. This year was an extremely strong applicant pool, the best we have seen to date!
At this time we have made our final decisions and would love to invite you to participate as a Resident Artist.
Congratulations!"

WOW! How I desired hearing these words. Since receiving this invitation in March I have been working towards funding my invitation as a 2017 Chulitna Wilderness Retreat Resident Artist. Chulitna Retreat speaks to the core of who I am and textures from which I create. I am both nourished and informed by nature and look to clarify my artistic voice and reacquaint myself to my innate rhythms. I am a choreographer, dance and performance artist, designer and mom. I have been working in this medium for 25 years.  As a mother of a 5-year-old, I have been creating on budgeted time and find pride and value in this negotiation. With the luxury of time, space and breath this residency provides, I feel strongly the potential to flourish and see this as an opportunity for me to fully invest in my creative process, and ultimately, my self.

I have invested money towards this opportunity but have not been able to raise the remaining portion of the costs. Asking for help is not easy and asking for money…the word ‘panic’ comes to mind. So, in this “11th hour”, I’m seeking financial assistance to send me to Alaska and support this well-timed opportunity.

Goal #1 “Wolf” $2367.41
Flight to Anchorage, Alaska
Remaining balance of my boarding

Goal #2 “Bear” $3555.48
Computer + Final Cut Pro + Sound Editing Program
(I have been editing sound & video as well as writing on a borrowed computer that crashes, curiously consistently, resulting in lost material. I wish to purchase a computer and use the time in this residency to teach myself the updated video and sound editing programs.)

Goal #3 “Moose” $409.98
Mobil Recording Device / H6 Zoom                                                                      (Recording sound offers me more flexibility in my designs and marketability as a sound designer. I wish to expand this part of my career.)

[* More about my artistic exploration *] I intend to find inspiration to inform my current project; an exploration of life and death cycles both literal and metaphoric as a constant confrontation of change and transformation as choice. How this phenomenon offers a dynamic course of cause and affect. These themes are universal. I am inspired and guided by the rhythms of the natural when left to its own devices. I will collect choreographic ideas from improvisational movement while wandering and exploring Alaskan wild landscapes and document via video recording and writing. I will meditate on organic sights, sounds and movement. I hope to record and edit sound from the remote environment. I will take time to find my flow, to listen, to feel my creative instinct and use the time to follow it through. This is a luxury I have not been afforded for years, submersion into the process.

I want to walk, watch, meditate, move, be moved, and find understanding to questions I may not have the space now to ask. I look with wide eyes and strong fortitude at what I might discover with this time, wild space, breath and solace.

"Chulitna Lodge is 180 miles from the nearest road, with fly-in access only.
Our Mission: to share a love for responsible exploration of our worlds most remote locations, with the intent of passing forward the value of maintaining such places wild, and to personally reap the benefits of life a world apart.
We seek to provide the time, space, clarity, and facilities for all forms of creative professionals to make and meditate."

“Creative work needs solitude. It needs concentration, without interruptions. It needs the whole sky to fly in, and no eye watching until it comes to that certainty which it aspires to, but does not necessarily have at once. Privacy, then.  A place apart – to pace, to chew pencils, to scribble and erase and scribble again.”
