As a talented young woman, Sharon McCaugherty had few career options. Through hard work, self study, and formal college education later in her life, she was able to build a career as an information technology professional, ending her career as an FBI employee.  Demonstrating the talents of hard working West Virginia women in STEM fields, she contributed to successful projects at NASA, the Department of Defense, and the FBI.  She blazed a trail for herself and had a passion for enabling young women to pursue STEM careers.

Sharon lost her battle with pancreatic cancer on May 17th, 2019, and until the very end of her life, she was determined to support young women in achieving their goals.  She was a native of Lumberport, WV, and graduated from Lincoln High School. Now, her family is honoring Sharon's vision through the Sharon McCaugherty Memorial Foundation Scholarship, a non-profit corporation.

The Sharon McCaugherty Memorial Foundation Scholarship will provide funding to financially disadvantaged young women in north central West Virginia who plan to attend college to pursue a career in STEM.  Funding will be provided to one student each year. All raised funds will be transferred to the Sharon McCaugherty Memorial Foundation.

Alexis Baker-Weekly, a June 2020 graduate of Shinnston High School in Shinnston, WV was awarded the first Sharon McCaugherty Memorial Foundation (SMMF) scholarship, valued at $20,000 over four years. Alexis is planning to study biomedical engineering at West Virginia University.  The goal of the Foundation is to raise $20,000 per year of scholarship funds for young women pursuing a science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM) education. Athena Sciences Corporation contributed $10,000 to this fund and will continue as a primary supporter. “We are excited to award the first scholarship to Ms. Baker-Weekly. The goal of the scholarship is to give intelligent and hard-working young women the help they need to succeed in a STEM field. We are excited to achieve this goal in awarding the scholarship to her”, according to Foundation Chairman Dan McCaugherty.
