Let the Sunshine In!

Knot's annual Share the Love celebration is virtual this year! Please join us as we continue our firm’s long tradition of gathering each February to give back by supporting a non-profit doing exceptional work.

People thrive in light. Natural light literally helps us feel warm; it syncs our body clocks and heightens our body’s immune response. Humans just feel happier and healthier in sunlight, as it raises serotonin levels and provides natural antibacterial properties.

Our recipient for this year’s Share the Love fundraising challenge is Helping Hands Reentry Outreach Centers. Since 2002, this Oregon-based non-profit has been successfully providing transitional housing for people and pets experiencing homelessness. Founded by Alan Evans, who himself was homeless for over 25 years, Helping Hands Reentry Outreach Centers are located in eleven facilities in four counties in Oregon. Evans started Helping Hands to give other homeless people what he himself had needed: a helping hand to a sustainable life.

The newest facility opened by Helping Hands is the Bybee Lakes Hope Center, which provides housing and trauma-informed services together in one location – a transformed 155,000 square-foot minimum-security correctional facility called Wapato Jail.

With the $60,000 we raise together, we can ensure that Helping Hands will have the resources they need to implement a key design feature for this project that is currently in danger of being value-engineered out of the construction budget: large windows to facilitate natural light and views of nature from the building’s interior. These large windows are a key part of the strategy to help overcome the oppressive elements of a correctional facility by adding windows, taking down fences, and opening up rather than closing in on the people who live there. Access to sunlight and views of nature are a central component of the “green prescription” that has been repeatedly proven to have a positive influence on mental health.

Let’s come together to fund this opportunity to give residents of the Bybee Lakes Hope Center something that we believe significantly contributes to the experience of feeling at home.

Please join us as we literally “Let the Sunshine In” for the people and pets who will live at Bybee Lakes Hope Center!
