Many moons ago, the queers of Meanjin (Brisbane) regularly gathered to find communion with one another and emancipate ourselves through the age-old ritual of dancing, gyrating, and pashing each other to disco.
But with COVID-19 racing around the world, the community had to make sacrifices. One of these sacrifices was giving up these gatherings, to flatten the curve, save lives, and hopefully return to these bacchanalian delights if all went well.
But we grow restless, and as we enter our fourth month of restrictions in efforts to stave off the spread of COVID-19, we grow weary and diminished. We spend endless evenings longing to transcend while shaking our groove thing on the dancefloor with our good Judies, wondering if we ever will again.
But don’t fret – there’s a light at the end of the tunnel…. or is that a disco ball?
