Shalom, enabling people to discover faith in Jesus

Who we are:

The original group was formed in 1996 by Sedbury and Stroat Evangelical Churches.  It was a small and committed group of people with and without learning disabilities who met together to learn more about Jesus, making the Gospel more accessible to those people who were unable to read and write and had cognitive difficulties in learning.

‘Shalom’ is the new name for the original group that was called ‘On the Level'. The ethos of the group has never changed and we now we meet in different venues across the Forest of Dean area.

What we are about:

We're a missional community of people with and without disabilities whose aim is to come together as equals before God and support one another in a safe space. This is done through meeting together to study the Bible, learn about Jesus, learn to pray and worship by using the Arts and creative ways. The aim is to make times accessible and meaningful to everyone who attends.

Who will benefit?:

The funding will benefit people with additional needs to be able to access and explore the Gospel of Jesus Christ in an interactive environment through using the creative arts. The groups meetings, events and gatherings also provide people with the opportunity to make and develop genuine friendships.

Others that will benefit include the churches who host the current groups and the churches where individual group members are a part of.

The group times and the safe space that is created during these gatherings provide an environment where everyone is accepted for who they are and allowed the space to be who God created them to be.  This then enables people to go on to contribute into the Body of Christ and to their wider communities.

Why there is a need?:

Currently there is a gap in available funding which enables this ministry to take place

It will be used to:

* Enable the Shalom Groups to continue in the short term as we seek  further grant funding for the future development and growth of the  Groups.
* Support those who have specific additional needs to be involved in       the Shalom groups regularly and participate fully.
* Equipment including art materials.
* Administration costs.

What does the support mean to us?:

The support means that people can continue to develop and explore their faith in an environment that is accessible and enhances their ability to learn and engage with the Gospel. They can also develop their skills in areas such as leadership to then be able to participate more fully in their church and community life.

Thank you:

People within the groups will be very grateful for any support both financially and in prayer.
