My name is Mohamed. I recently visited  Somalia this past summer for the first time. It was an unbelievable experience connecting with family and walking the land of my forefathers. While touring the country, I witnessed first hand the devastating impact of the 2017 drought on the people. Makeshift camps were established in the outskirts of major cities for drought survivors. Thousands have lost all their livestock and wholly dependent on aid to feed their families. The survivors maintained good spirits, but are destitute without any means to rebuild their lives and ill prepared for the next drought.

When I returned to Canada, my friend (Aziz) and I decided to relaunch our NGO Dadaal for Development to help drought survivors rebuild their lives.  Once we raise the $30,000 we will return to Somalia to personally deliver the aid and projects. All funds will go towards drought affected communities for the following initiatives:

1)      Livestock restocking – purchase livestock for families to become self-sufficient and return to their pastoral lifestyle

2)      Aid – in addition to providing livestock, families will be given monetary aid to cover cost of basic necessities

3)      Water projects – funds will be allocated to digging shallow and rehabilitating existing wells in communal settlements

100% of the donations collected will go towards drought survivors. All costs associated with this campaign and personal expenses related to delivering the aid/projects will be covered out of pocket.

Why donate?

Over the past 25 years, Somalia has experienced a cycle of protracted droughts, culminating in the most recent one in 2017, when rains failed for three seasons in a row. For many in Somalia, the drought was the worst in living memory. By the end of 2017, 6.2 million people were in need of humanitarian assistance, over 1 million people were internally displaced, and 80% of livestock had been lost.

Nomadic and Pastoral communities were among the hardest hit as their livelihood is dependent on livestock production which provides basic subsistence foods such as milk, meat and blood and are also used for wealth accumulation, prestige, insurance and inheritance. The income generated from the sale of livestock servers to buy additional food items, crops and clothing. Livestock are also used as a means of transportation, dowry in marriage and to fulfill reciprocal (social) obligations. Therefore any adverse factor which negatively impacts livestock, threatens the livelihood and life of nomadic and pastoral communities.
