Seymour’s Bird Sanctuary is a licensed exotic bird sanctuary in the State of Maine. The Sanctuary works to care for birds that have suffered from abuse and neglect and require special care and attention. The Sanctuary is frequently operated at capacity.

Birds are the fourth most popular pet in the United States, and one of the most difficult to care for. Many people do not have the required capacity and patience to deal with the animals, leading to many dire circumstances. Birds can live from 20 to 60 years, often outliving their owners and leaving them to fend for themselves. The long-term maintenance and care for the birds requires fresh fruits and vegetables, and species-specific special bird diets – as well as the beloved toys and treats – not to mention the vet bills.

Seymour’s Bird Sanctuary is not a non-profit organization. We meet operating costs through a combination of funds from a small retail store, boarding birds, donations from caring members of the community, and the help of a small crew of volunteers. Because the owner does not draw a paycheck, nor does she have employees, the organization did not qualify for the Cares Act.
