Hello, my name is Felicia Ray aka @SeamstressFelicia. I started this fundraiser to help raise money to get a dedicated shop/classroom space for my Lil Sewing School. I have been sewing for over 25 years and I absolutely love it! I learned to sew as a kid and it changed my life. I can't imagine life without my sewing machine(s). Every kid should learn to sew. Most kids can begin learning at the young age of 5!
I love working with children and I know that EVERYONE needs to have basic sewing skills. Sewing is not just a hobby, it is a life skill that is rarely taught anymore. I am one of very few seamstresses in my area and I live in a pretty big city. I know that a sewing school would be a great benefit to the community.
Over the past few years I have been asked the same question "will you teach my child to sew". My answer is always, "I would love to, but I don't know where I would hold a class. I don't have a dedicated shop space."
Parents are great and will respond with "you can come to my house and teach". That "sounds great" but that would require me to transport very large equipment and supplies each time I had a scheduled class. Then once I arrive, I would have to set it all up and then break it all down when I leave. That is ALOT to do and I can't do it alone.
My own home is not ideal to teach in at this point. As a seamstress who works from home in a tiny townhouse, my home is already door to door fabric, machines and cutting tables. And of course, I also raise my children in my home. I don't have the square footage to accommodate a classroom of children and machines on top of everything else.
I need a dedicated shop/classroom!
Retail space in Fort Worth is very expensive, even a modest little shop. I can easily afford the up keep once I get setup, but I can't afford the costs involved to open shop all on my own.
I need help with startup fees like:
licenses insurance deposit rent/mortage (at least 6 months in advance) sewing machines desks tools fabric shelving cutting tables ...and hopefully a nice sign on the door. :)
I want to provide the children with a safe place to learn in a great neighborhood. I also want them to have access to all of the equipment they need to perfect their skills over the years.
Recently, I posted my first class on my website just to gauge/poll how many students would be interested. The response has been great!! Unfortunately, if I am not able to raise funds for a dedicated shop before the end of summer, I will ultimately have to cancel the summer class or host it in my home :(
