Sewing machines for the mothers in the Payatas

Donation protected
Hello, my name is Stephan van Erp, and I am a professor in theology at KU Leuven in Belgium.

This summer I have encountered some very impressive women in the Payatas, the slums of Manila. These mothers have lost their husbands or sons and grandsons, who were killed extra-judicially by the police. Sometimes the mothers and their children were at home and witnessed the killing of their loved ones. Their stories are heartbreaking and it is important that justice is being done.

Some of these mothers have started a sewing shop together to earn some money to support their families. They make beautiful clothes, cushion covers, and bags. They are a caring community and form the backbone of feeding projects for other families in the Payatas, and they support children with scholarships. They have recently also started urban gardening in the slums, which provides families with vegetables and spices.

The mothers of the sewing shop need sewing machines to be able to do their work, both in the sewing house where they currently work, and also in their own houses, so they can take care of their children, and their families.

I would like you to ask for support for these mothers and their families. One sewing machine can feed a large family of grandparents, uncles and aunts, and their children and grandchildren. As a community, they are a sign of resilience and hope, and for that they deserve our deepest respect and support.
