Seven Hills will be an inclusive Family Medicine Practice in Richmond VA, that with your help and support, will be opening in the fall of 2022. We believe all people deserve to be treated with dignity and respect for their bodily autonomy, and are passionate about serving those that have traditionally faced barriers accessing high-quality medical care. We will be here to help you exert agency over your own health and body, whatever form that body may take. We will offer comprehensive primary care, gender-affirming care, and reproductive healthcare, including abortion services by either medication or surgical procedure. We will strive to provide a welcoming and safe environment in which patients can find the care they need without stigma, a place where they can feel informed and empowered in their healthcare choices.
We are fundraising in the hopes of opening our doors earlier than we had been planning. All indications point to the US Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey later this summer, completely overturning federal protection of abortion services. When that happens, trigger laws, abortion bans and restrictions in almost 20 states throughout the South and Midwest will take effect almost immediately, with as many as 6 more states certain or likely to follow. Patients living in those states will be forced to travel great distances to get the vital care that they need. The National Abortion Foundation projects 100,000-150,000 patients traveling per year as a conservative estimate. This demand will completely overwhelm the supply of providers in the states where abortion services are still protected. Even before these new restrictions have gone into place Planned Parenthood in Richmond already has a 2-3 week wait for appointments. Virginia will be one of two Southern States where abortion care is still legally accessible, and the only one without a mandatory waiting period. The city of Richmond sits at the intersection of I64 and I95 and is one of the easier cities to access by car or plane. We are about to see a flood of people in desperate and timely need.
To protect the long term viability of the practice it has become clear that we need to own the clinic building ourselves. Virginia landlords, even allies, are extremely reluctant to lease to an abortion provider. Virginia tenant and eviction laws favor landlords, and converting any existing commercial space to a clinic will necessitate an expensive build-out that we simply cannot afford to risk losing if a landlord has second thoughts and loses their nerve.
As long as abortion care carries the current stigma (and risk of legal liability), any practice will only have a secure future if they control the space. Commercial mortgages require a significant down payment (equity) and if we want to begin treating patients this fall we need to acquire a property that doesn’t require major renovations. We are currently on track to buy a building and open in about 9-12 months, but with your financial support we hope to begin treating patients this fall.
