Setting Captives Free in Cambodia

Donation protected
Dear Friends,

My name is Sarah Mayer, and this September I plan to move to Cambodia to volunteer for a year (hopefully more) at She Rescue Home , an after-care facility for girls who have been raped, trafficked, prostituted or are at risk of any of these things. I will be primarily working in their sewing center, teaching, guiding and designing products to be sold to support the home. I’m excited to be using my background in fashion design to support what She Rescue Home is doing in the lives of so many Cambodian girls in the home and the ones to come. I also look forward to just being there, to build relationships among the Khmer people, sharing the hope of the Gospel and conveying the heart of our heavenly father. That we all are made in the image of God, and each life, boy or girl, is incredibly precious to him.

The journey to move to Cambodia began in high school when I read a memoir about a Khmer woman trafficked at a young age into a brothel and her difficult journey to freedom from the bonds of prostitution. Hit with the horror that these atrocities were happening in the world, I knew it was a injustice that I could never turn my back on. God also made sure I would never forget, as he has since continued to lay the burden of child sex trafficking on my heart.

I was reading statistics the other day like the ones below, about modern day slavery and especially child sex trafficking in Cambodia, and I was overwhelmed. Each statistic is a real breathing life, vulnerable in the absolute worst way. They aren't just numbers, but people, especially children. Thousands of children in desperate need of rescuing, protection, and hope. Though I may never even put a dent in ending child sex trafficking, I can impact one precious life forever and that is huge. That is one less life filled with trauma, shame, addiction, abuse, rape…death. So I had a choice, keep ignoring the facts, or answer God’s call and go. With no other major commitments in my life I knew that the time was now.

Like most missionaries, in order for me to carry out the ministry God has called me to do I need financial and spiritual support. I am looking to form a team of people who will surround my ministry in prayer and help fund it. In order for me to go and serve for a year in Cambodia I need to raise $12,000 which will cover travel, medical and living expenses.

It would mean so much to me if you would join this team and help me in setting captives free in Cambodia. I can’t imagine where I would be if not for the support of this global community of friends and family such as yourselves to embolden and strengthen me on this mission. Thank you for considering to walk along side me.

Many Blessings,

Sarah Mayer

The Global Slavery Index estimated in 2016, that 45.8 Million people in the world, are in some form of modern slavery.

Cambodia ranks #3, after Uzbekistan and North Korea for having the highest estimated prevalence of modern slavery in proportion to their population. (Global Slavery Index, 2017)

It is estimated that 40,000 to 100,000 individuals in Cambodia are in prostitution (a form of modern slavery), and 30-35% are estimated to be children. (ECPAT Cambodia, 2011)

Cambodia is a popular destination for sex tourism...particularly child sex tourism. (ECPAT Cambodia, 2011)
