Help the Family of Seth Sutherland

You may have heard about the devastatingly tragic death of a 17-year old student, Seth Sutherland, at Lake Minneola High School outside Orlando, FL yesterday (Tuesday, Nov. 14). Seth was the beloved son of Beth Littlefield Greenwaldt and nephew of Scott Littlefield, friends from high school. Seth was dearly loved and his suicide came as a complete shock to his family and friends.
It’s difficult, if not impossible, to understand what someone in Seth’s shoes could have been struggling with or the silent pain that led him to the decision to end his life. It’s just as difficult to comprehend the pain, anguish, and compounding struggles his parents, siblings, and extended family will be dealing with in the days, weeks, and months to follow.
Due to the sudden death of my partner ten years ago, my sister and I personally understand severe grief and some of the unexpected financial strains that come with losing a close family member. We also know that grief paralyzes. Grief and shock cause people to feel “numb”, helpless, and apathetic to say the least. The very basic functions of daily life become unimportant and irrelevant and are only compounded by any significant increase in bills and loss of income. When people ask “How can I help?”, those grieving can comprehend little beyond their loss and therefore find it impossible to answer that question.
Seth’s family will need all the love and support they can get from friends, family, and complete strangers. After the death of a family member, friends are quick to provide meals and offer assistance, but in my experience that quickly dissipates (usually after a couple of weeks).
In addition to funeral costs, we’re raising money to help cover the cost of any unforeseen loss in income, travel costs for Seth’s family members to fly from where they live in the Northeast to Florida, and any grief counseling his family may seek in the months to follow. It is our goal to raise the necessary funds for Seth's family's immediate needs and also support them beyond the next couple of weeks.
We ask you to please donate whatever you can and share this fundraiser with your friends and on your timeline. Together we can show Beth, Scott, and their entire family the healing power of universal love and compassion during what is sure to be one of the darkest moments in their lives.
