Seth's fire relief fund

As some of you know, my brother Seth Flicker, endured a catastrophe last week. As Seth in New Jersey at a family event, he got a frantic phone call from the superintendent of his building telling him that there was a large fire in his apartment and that this fire has destroyed most of his possessions.


Seth returned from New Jersey to discover that this fire – stemming most probably from poor wiring in a closet light - had ravaged his bedroom. Every piece of clothing he had was destroyed ether by the fire, the smoke or the water. His laptop and all other computer supplies were also wrecked beyond repair. His bed, desk, lights, rugs, curtains, shoes, files, and hard drives were similarly devastated. Even though the bedroom door was closed – thankfully – the firefighters needed to break through the windows and walls to create air vents. All of Seth’s furniture – the couch, chaise, armchair, tables, bookcases, coffee table – were irrevocably ruined.


When all was said and done, Seth managed to save a few dozen books (out of over 1500) and some pieces of art. That’s all. Nothing else.


If there ever has a time, Seth needs our help right now.


Seth had no insurance which means that he will have to start from scratch in a few weeks when he is allowed back into the apartment after it gets gutted and rebuilt. As most of you know, Seth had taken some time from teaching to pursue other interests. Money – to say the least – is scarce.


To add to this, four weeks prior, Seth had adopted a 2-year-old Jack Russell mix from a shelter. While Jack survived the blaze, having been rescued by the fire fighters, he developed a skin ailment due to exposure to the toxics in the air. This required Seth to spend most of his remaining money on vet care.


This disaster has overwhelmed and devastated Seth. He doesn’t know how he will get through this. Of course he will, and will be stronger for the experience, but right now, he needs the help of his friends and family. I have set a goal of $7500.00 to get Seth back on his feet. This will help him buy a bed, some clothes, sheets, pillows, dishes, toiletries, etc – the necessities to begin again.
