Volunteership with Mayan Families in Guatemala

Hello!  My name's Serissa!  My husband and I want to volunteer for 2-3 weeks with Mayan Families, a nonprofit organization that educates, feeds, shelters and heals the children and families living near Panajachel, Guatemala which is located on Lake Atitlan.  As a certified teacher and a former IT professional, I will teach English or computer literacy skills.  My husband will fix existing structures, help to build new ones, or perform general maintenance.

Currently, I'm sponsoring the education of a young girl through Mayan Familes.  Her name is Maria. She lives with her mother, younger sister and grandparents in a humble dwelling.  Her father is no longer involved with the family.  I chose to sponsor Maria because she is in 3rd grade, just like my twin daughters!

While in Guatemala, we will have the opportunity to meet Maria!  So, we want to do something special for Maria and her family while we're there.   As summer approaches, we will have a better understanding of Maria and her family's needs.  However, we definitely plan to personally purchase food, clothing, medicine and other supplies that they need.  However, we also want to contribute to Maria's community as a whole.

We hope to raise funds through this campaign.  To help raise additional funds, we established a new travel blog business called Footprints on Fire.   Our business plans to donate at least 10% of all profit to Mayan Families.  Remaining profit will help us cover our travel expenses.

If you are unable to donate at this time, that's not a problem!  Visit our Supporters page on Footprints on Fire to see the many fun and free ways you can support our travel blog business.  If you happen to be a writer, you can show your support by visiting our Write for Us  page.
