We are the Grayson/Matthews family and 2017 was NOT our year.
It was an 8 month process to close on our house even with a VA loan and a great Realtor. Soon after we moved in we started having plumbing issues. Then more and more plumbing issues arose and new expenses were piling up everyday.
We all were getting sick and didn't know why. After several doctors visits and trips to the ER we still didn't have any answers. --We now know this was all caused by toxic mold in our walls--
This past fall we were hit by Hurricane Irma. She flooded our home, put leaks in our roof and damaged our backyard. Our floors and a lot of our furniture were ruined and we have been displaced ever since; along with our pets -- In order to prevent further damage to the house we took up the soaked flooring only to find that mold was already present--
Two weeks after the hurricane our newest daughter was born into this mess.
Our insurance is giving us the run around, FEMA denied us, the SBA denied us, and we are still seeking assistance through the Wounded Warrior Project. We have an estimate of $40000 to complete all the repairs we need. This covers mold remediation, new floors, insulation, drywall, paint, kitchen cabinets/counters, doors, and all of the necessary labor. --Our goal is $50000 to include preventative measures so our house won't flood again--
Our main goal is to get our house livable again so we can get back to normal. Our newest daughter has never seen her home or the room we had prepared for her and the two older kids don't understand why we can't go home. Being displaced has had a stressful effect on our family and everyone who has assisted us so far. We are currently living in 1 room together at my grandmother's house while still trying to manage our normal bills and busy lives.
