Help the Sequeiras Relocate/Restart

Donation protected
Sometimes, even the strongest champions need champions of their own.

Right now – as June becomes July – is that time for the Sequeiras, and you can help bring them to a new home with just a little support. They have to leave their current home in the Outer Banks of North Carolina in a few days and are setting out for Richmond, Virginia, to start anew. But they need a home, and they need help finding one, and they need it now.

Most of us have had hard times; some have had REALLY hard times. Have you had a time when you needed help in a mighty fashion? Remember how tough it is to share your story or ask for assistance? Remember how solutions seemed out of reach? Remember how alone you felt with your struggle? If someone reached out and helped you, do you recall how big even modest help seemed? Have you wanted to be that helping hand?

Today, with a few clicks, you can be an answer for this family, helping the Sequeiras move forward from their really hard times to find a new home and make a new start.

I’ve known these amazing and devoted women for many years – Margaret since our time in college together working in community service, Donna since we worked together in social justice in DC, and Mollie (my astounding god-daughter) literally since she was born. They are fiercely independent and golden-hearted people, the kind of people you would want devoting their lives to making the world a better place. Which is exactly what they do: both Donna and Margaret are ministers and activists, and their high school daughter was raised to pursue her own passions for Making a Difference.

When they are able to do so, Margaret and Donna do share their lives and talents and resources graciously with others in their lives who need help. I know, because I have been one of those people, and I know many others who have been blessed by the loving support of Donna and Margaret over the years.

Trust me here: you really, really want these wonderful women active in the world, and you’d be really lucky to have them as neighbors, as members of your community. Since they moved to the East Coast from the Bay Area I’ve missed them terribly, but they had a vision to follow that took them to communities back in Virginia and North Carolina. A vision of community, of church, of family, of home. However, having even the clearest and most powerful vision does not mean that there are no challenges to attain it.

For the Sequeiras the challenges have multiplied in recent years and now they need community to help reach their Next Step.

Margaret’s most recent church position in the Outer Banks was not full time, her contract is ending, and other employment options are rare or insufficient in that small community. Donna has suffered for years from intense pain and severe medical conditions that limit her ability even to sleep, much less to work full time, and the struggle to qualify for disability has dragged on for years and it is still unclear when that will be resolved (which would help a great deal). And now the home they have been renting is being sold and they have to GET OUT

Richmond is their Next Step – a place not too far to relocate, closer to some community and family support, and richer in opportunity for work and Mollie’s education. Margaret is job searching like mad and they are buried in packing boxes as they try to vacate their home by the end of June. They have the resources to move themselves and their belongings. But they need help securing a place to live in the Richmond area. That’s where you and I can do our part.

The Sequeiras need enough financial support to afford the security deposit and initial rent in Richmond until Margaret can secure new work, and to address the usual-but-unforeseen expenses that so often spell disaster for folks of limited means navigating a major family transition. Please help as you can.
