Sensory Room Reinstallation

GREENWICH TOY & LEISURE LIBRARY ASSOCIATION sadly had to leave their premises in February 2020. As a charity providing much needed support to children and young adults with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities and their families for 48 years GTLLA is looking to reinstall its much needed state of the art sensory room.

You may ask, what is a sensory room? Multi- sensory rooms evolved from the Dutch concept of Snoezelen in the 1980’s and are specifically designed to enable people with special educational needs and disabilities to enjoy a wide range of sensory experiences through therapy, learning, stimulation, relaxation and fun. There are both children and adults that can find mainstream environments challenging;  harsh lighting, loud, unexpected noises, certain smells, large crowds all of which can trigger an adverse reaction. This is where a sensory room can become a useful tool to improve the overall well-being of its users.

The unique room will measure approximately 12m by 4m and offer a calm, safe, relaxing/stimulating and therapeutic environment for those with a range of profound physical and sensory processing issues to include autism, cerebral palsy, visual impairment, neurological and chronic anxiety disorders and brain injuries who are struggling in terms of their behaviour, communication, social interaction and learning.

Our fully immersive and interactive sensory room will consist of a large temperature controlled water bed, subtly lit bubble tubes that change colour, a sound and light floor panel to play music and games on, a tactile board, fibre optics in a variety of dazzling colours to calm the senses, an infinity hut complete with mirrors and lights and a separate infinity panel to interact with. The room would not be complete without its sound and projector system which creates a host of evocative sounds, sights and scenery which can be personalised for individual and group users.

A suitable premises has now been identified within the Royal Borough of Greenwich and we are desperate to raise the funds to make this possible. The cost of re-installation of the specialist equipment will be in the region of £3,500 and with your help and support we can make it happen.

Any donation, no matter how small would make a huge difference to so many people's lives and especially to those living with sensory processing difficulties, physical difficulties and those on the autistic spectrum.

Please share this with your friends, family and colleagues. Thank you all for taking the time to read our campaign.
