Hi my name is Gabriel de la Cruz and I am a teacher at June Jordan School for Equity in San Francisco and Executive Director of Break 4 Tots.
Break 4 Tots mission is to serve the community one break at time by organizing the community, developing platforms to raise awareness through Hip Hop arts, and providing scholarships to college students focused on a career in working with young people.
I’m raising money to take Hip Hop Studies students from June Jordan School for Equity on a trip to New York City from May 14-18.
Hip Hop Studies is designed to give students an introduction to the history of Hip Hop culture that is not often represented in mainstream media and to provide an outlet for youth voice and creative expression.
On this trip students will reminisce and learn during a rare, immersive guided adventure. Ride through Harlem and travel through the Boogie Down Bronx experiencing classic backdrops with real-time narratives from iconic, charismatic hip hop pioneers.
In addition to experiencing Hip Hop culture student will have the opportunity to visit several colleges such as New York University, Hunters College, and Columbia.
We will also visit HOT 97 WQHT, Times Square, 9/11 Memorial, Statue of Liberty, tons of museums and more.
If I reach my goal I will be able to purchase:
1) 10 Flights from SF to NYC
2) 5 Hotel rooms near Central Park
3) 10 subway transit tickets
4) 3 meals a day for 8 students and 2 chaperones
5) The opportunity to take students on the world famous Hush Tour (www.hushtours.com)
When we return from our trip students will have the opportunity to teach Middle School students the rich history of Hip Hop culture and how young people can elevate their own voice thru Hip Hop.
All of my students come from working class families and many have never been on a trip out of the state or on an airplane. Your contribution will provide students with a once in a lifetime experience to explore, learn, and grow. On behalf of my students, we appreciate your support and look forward to sharing our experience with you all.
