Let's Send Amy to College!

Amy’s story is one of love, dedication, perseverance and hard work. And I am proud to help share her story in order to raise the money she needs to attend Drexel University in Philadelphia this fall.

Amy interned this past year in the Interior Design department at the Looms. As I got to know her I found out that she was helping raise her two siblings, ages 7 & 9, with her step-father, while her mother returned to the Dominican Republic. In addition to attending school and working on weekends,  Amy was also responsible for getting her siblings to school, taking them to doctor’s appointments and after-school activities. I quickly came to realize that Amy was not an average teenager.

Over the winter I spoke with Amy about her application process for colleges. When she began to hear back that she had been accepted at several schools and had received significant scholarship money from all of them, she wondered how she would make a decision where to go since she had not yet visited any of them. With a car in Hyannis, the decision was easy for me. I would take Amy and her brother, with my son, on a road trip to visit three colleges. I was not going to let Amy, who had done so much for her family, miss such an important experience.

For three days we drove 800 miles through six states stopping at three colleges. Traveling with others can be a challenge. But not Amy. With her brother in tow, she was efficient and organized. She was always at the front of the tour group asking questions. This is a girl who knows what she wants and to see what Amy’s life could be like for the next four years was very exciting. She would be without the responsibility of raising her siblings and would now only have to worry about herself and her studies. Her future is bright.

But now comes the tricky part. Amy has secured $64,000  in scholarships, grants and her own savings of the $74,000 needed for tuition, room & board. Due to family circumstances, the remaining $10,000 she was depending on has fallen through.  Given the short timeframe between now and the beginning of school in September, running a "Go Fund Me" campaign is Amy's best chance of raising the necessary funds. In future years, Amy will be applying for additional loans to cover her tuition gap.

After watching Amy give so much of herself to her family, I would hate to see Amy's dream to attend college fall through. This is Amy's opportunity to earn an education that will set her up for future success in life. I hope that you will join me in making a difference in Amy’s life by making a donation to her “Go Fund Me” campaign. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for your consideration.

Truly,
Bess Clarke
