Send Taylor to the New York Times

Donation protected
Hello! My name is Taylor and I am a seventeen-year-old aspiring photographer. Believe it or not I have the chance to study photojournalism at The New York Times. Here's the story.

I have had my camera since I was twelve years old, when I first took an interest in photography. I have always loved looking at photos because they capture moments that would otherwise vanish. At first it was just a hobby, but photography soon became something much more important to me. I love being able to take a picture and shape that image to what I had envisioned.

Last December, a friend sent me a link to The School of The New York Times website (thanks Jenny!). As I was reading through it, I knew I absolutely had to go. The New York times offers a summer program called “Photojournalism as art” where students get to work with professionals from this 167-year-old iconic news organization. The Times has worldwide readership and influence, and this program offers a once in a lifetime experience. Students study photojournalism both practically and aesthetically and learn to translate what they feel into photographs that show their perspective.

On January 31st I completed an extensive application process, now all I had to do was wait. For a couple of weeks, it was all I could think about. Knowing that photography will be part of my future, I’ve already applied to Dawson College in Montreal for the professional photography program next fall. But, I am having trouble seeing a path to turn my passion into my livelihood. I’ve spoken with a few photographers about my aspirations; they have all told me that it is really hard to build a career as a photographer.  This program would expose me to many unique career paths involving photography while continuing to practice and improve my craft with help and advice from experts. I have taken photography courses in Montreal and Toronto but what I could learn at  the New York Times would be beyond anything I’ve experienced yet.

Being admitted into this program would be a huge opportunity for me. It had been about a month with no news from the NYC summer academy and I was starting to get worried that I would never hear from them. But, I finally received an email on March 8th.

I got in! I was accepted!

I couldn’t believe it, I could be studying photography in Manhattan in 3 months!

Now comes the hard part. The  program is Can$7500. I applied for financial aid from the Times and I was very thankful to receive a scholarship of US$1000. I was also able to raise Can$4000 from family and I am currently working two jobs. The program begins on July 22nd and unfortunately, the payment is needed up front, two months before the program starts(May 22nd).  I will be short Can$3000(including travel expenses).

That’s where you guys come in. I need your help! Any donation, whether it be big or small, is a huge help.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. You support means more to me than you can imagine.

Any amount donated is extremely appreciated, but here are some thank you offers for bigger contributions:)
