Send Tulsa Kids to Hidden Figures

THE WHY
In a few short days, I turn 33. THIRTY-THREE. A lot has happened over those last 3+ decades, and I've got to admit, the best parts of life thus far have been from serendipidous experiences.

Like that time I went to college far away because new friends told me it'd be a fun place to be. Or that time I got a liiiittle wastey face and gave my number to this rando ginger Jew. OR that time that this guy got elected to be President and I just decided to start drawing to keep from being sad.

20, 10, or even 1 year ago, if you asked, I would have never thought I'd be here, but the ride has been even more than I could ever have dreamed.

THE WHAT
I've got a lot for which to be grateful, and I've spent my time - especially lately - reflecting (and acting) on ways I can be there for others. I've gotten where I am on the shoulder of others, and the best way I can think to celebrate 33 is be that person for someone else.

THE HOW
Many of you may have seen that gofundme events are popping up around the country, raising money for kids to see a new movie, Hidden Figures. As described by Forbes , Hidden Figures is"the crowd-pleasing dramedy, about the under-heralded female African-American NASA mathematicians who helped put Americans into space...." This movie is important for many reasons, but for me, it gives me hope. That women - specifically minority women - can be and do anything they put their minds to. That kids have role models that are strong and look like them. That education can truly make a difference. And that's it's pretty freaking rad to be smart.

THE ASK
My birthday wish is to buy out a whole theater (or more!) and invite local kids to see the movie, discuss it's importance, and see that others in the community believe in their success. I've picked $3300 as an amount because of my 33rd, and will use all amounts raised to buy movie tickets, snacks, the Hidden Figures book for teachers to stock the school library, and market the event to local community organizations to make posters and cheer on the kids as they come out of the movie.

Every little bit helps! For reference, movie tickets cost about $8 each, and I'll work on better pricing with the theater(s) based on the amount I'm able to fundraise.

Please join me in reminding our Tulsa kids that they are smart, capable, and supported to be whatever they want, so long as they have faith and hard work.
