Send Thomas to PROMYS!

Hi, I’m Thomas and I really need your help! It has always been important to me to work hard for my future and relentlessly pursue academic goals that are meaningful to me. As a sophomore at Malden High School, I have dedicated myself this year to learn a lot of cool math that is beyond what is typically covered in traditional high school classes. Until this year, I never knew that math could be so exciting! Back in the fall, my math teacher suggested that I apply to PROMYS - a challenging number theory program for high school students who are passionate about mathematics. After researching the program, I gained confidence that this would be an amazing opportunity to solve incredibly interesting and challenging math problems with top students from all over the world. Even though I did not expect to be accepted in my first year of applying, I poured my blood, sweat, and tears into solving some of the most challenging problems I have ever solved on the application problem set. I knew the admissions decisions would be emailed out in early May, and I was fully expecting to find out that I had not been accepted this year...BUT then one day an email from Glenn Stevens popped up, and I read the words, “Dear Thomas, I am delighted to inform you that you have been accepted into the PROMYS Program.” Needless to say, I was completely shocked and overjoyed. I am so incredibly excited about the opportunity to learn a lot of cool math this summer, and it is so clear to me that this my next step to shaping my future - my path to college and beyond.

I was really happy to receive a $1500 scholarship, but I still need to raise $2700 to cover the costs of the program. Because I really did not expect to be accepted, my family and I did not plan to budget and save for this. To help my parents out, I am trying to raise as much of this money as possible. If you would like to help me realize my dream of going to PROMYS this summer, I would be so grateful for your support. Thanks for reading my story!

Information about PROMYS
Here is an excerpt about the PROMYS program from the PROMYS site :

PROMYS is a challenging program designed to encourage ambitious high school students to explore the creative world of mathematics. Each summer, approximately 80 high school students from around the country gather on the campus of Boston University for six weeks of rigorous mathematical activity. Through their intensive efforts to solve an assortment of unusually challenging problems in Number Theory, participants will practice the art of mathematical discovery. The problem sets encourage students to design their own numerical experiments and to employ their own powers of analysis to discover mathematical patterns, formulate and test conjectures, and justify their ideas by devising their own mathematical proofs.
