I am so excited to have been offered a place as Guest Crew on the eXXpedition Artic Virtual Voyage! From June 1 - 14, 2021, I'll meet up with other guest crew from around the world to develop an "in-depth understanding of the true impact of the plastics issue, forge and deepen relationships within [the] eXXpedition global community, develop solutions-based thinking and result in an action plan to apply crew superpowers to solve the problem."
eXXpedition is a super cool organization that puts together "all-female voyages exploring the impact of and solutions to plastic and toxic pollution in our ocean." They combine my passions for 1) leadership, 2) research, 3) plastic pollution, 4) supporting women in science and 5) sailing, which is incredible!
As a member of the Social Justice Cooperative's Zero Waste Action Team, I've been working on better understanding the sources of plastic in the city of St. John's. So far we have conducted a Break Free From Plastic Brand Audit and have a survey circulating right now (with a chance to win one of two $25 gift cards to the St. John's Farmer's Market!). Our goal is to identify the biggest polluters so that we can hold them to account by developing an extended producer responsibility (EPR) policy for Newfoundland and Labrador. EPR forces producers to be responsible for the product at the end of its life, instead of communities that have to use taxpayer money to fund waste management systems.
This year we've started with the city of St. John's and you can find our brand audit data on this app that I created. Next year, I'd like to be able to include representation from all over Newfoundland and Labrador so that we can start to accumulate really great data to show our legislators and the polluting companies that we're paying attention and we want to stop plastic pollution!
That's where the eXXpedition virtual voyage comes in! Though we don't get to go sailing, the $600 price tag on the voyage covers 20h of contact time and access to eXXpedition resources and networks after the voyage. The resources and networks are the aspects of this voyage that are most beneficial to our community here in NL. I want to learn more about marine plastic pollution and connect with more stakeholders to gain the skills, knowledge and resources to expand the SJC's plastic pollution research work to include both marine and land plastic pollution. As a province with a lot of coastline and a population that relies on healthy oceans for their livelihood, it is so important to keep those oceans pollution-free!
