Send Myint Zaw's Daughter to School

Donation protected
Myint Zaw-- a long-time employee of Rustic Pathways, and lifetime friend to myself and many other students-- has been sharing the vivid histories of Myanmar with foreigners for decades. If you're reading this, then you have experienced firsthand how Myint Zaw's smile can light up a room, how his laugh can turn a bad day good, and how much he is willing to sacrifice to enrich the lives of his students.

Nyein Nyein (age 3), Myint Zaw, and Win Win Htay

Nyein Nyein (pronounced Nyeh Nyeh), Myint Zaw's 9-year-old daughter, is currently enrolled in Myanmar's public school system. Most of you will remember the schools we visited alongside Myint Zaw, and the passion for learning that their students displayed. Nyein Nyein shares the same hunger for knowledge and curiosity that those students did, and we have the opportunity to enrich her life like her father enriched ours.

Unfortunately, the public education system in Myanmar is outdated and poorly-funded. Government expenditure on education in Myanmar is equivalent to around one-half the global average as a proportion of GDP, according to the Economist's Intelligence Unit. In a country with 1/6th of the population of the United States, the government provides only 1/60th of the funding for education. Teachers are also underpaid, and many students do not receive enough individual attention in the classroom, necessitating costly private tutoring just to achieve government standards. By raising only $3,800, we can help send Nyein Nyein to one of the best schools in Mandalay for an entire year. That figure is the total cost of tuition, materials, and transportation, but it pays for much more than that. By providing Nyein Nyein with a high-quality education, we can empower a young woman from a developing country to exact change where it is needed most.

Below, you can find details about Nyein Nyein, MCTA International Middle School, and more information on public education in Myanmar.

Nyein Nyein was born on the 29th of September, 2008 in Mandalay, Myanmar.

In school, Nyein Nyein excels in every subject, but her personal favorite is English.

After finishing her schooling, Nyein Nyein hopes to become a doctor so that she can improve the health of others.

Nyein Nyein likes to play with her friends, read, and complete her homework when she isn't in school.

Mandalay Chan Thar Academy (or MCTA) was established in 2005 and is dedicated to providing high-quality international school education to the best and brightest young people in the region. Known as one of Mandalay’s leading schools, MCTA is a progressive and dynamic institution with a reputation for teaching excellence and parent/student satisfaction.
