My name is Kye Wotton. I’m 20 years old, I live in Kitchener, ON, and I'm currently in school working to achieve my childhood dream of being a firefighter. But outside of school, I spend most of my waking hours training and competing in rock climbing.
Climbing is the biggest part of my life. I started 8 years ago, and I’ve been competing for the last 6. I train 4-5 days a week with a dedicated group of strong climbers. Last year I spent 3 months travelling across North America, completing a ton of really tough routes and keeping track of my progress along the way. This summer I’m moving to Vancouver to do more high level training.
Climbing competitions are especially tough – you don’t get to look at the routes before you have to climb them. You only get a few minutes and a few tries at each climb – It’s a very make or break atmosphere, and something that I struggled with mentally for a long time.
This past year though I’ve really been able to make a breakthrough – I’m currently ranked 6th in Ontario, and 14th overall for bouldering in Canada. With these results, I’ve been given the opportunity to represent Team Canada at two World Cup events in China this year.
The events themselves have been covered, but unfortunately that’s it. So to make this happen, I need to raise $2500 to cover the flights, accommodations, and basic meals.
For me, being able to go to these competitions means getting to compete and learn from some of the best climbers in the world, on some of the best set routes, while wearing the Canadian flag.
