Send Jesse Sachs to Palestine

Please help me get to Palestine for the holidays this year. As a Jew, I am connected to the Holy Land whether I like it or not. The conflict in Israel/Palestine strikes me as one of the most complex and protracted blockages in the flow of human cooperation and peace on this Earth.  I am answering the call this holiday season to leverage my privilege and bring my body, mind and heart to show up there for a few weeks.

The call comes from Palestinian organizers who are tirelessly working for justice and peace under frustrating and dangerous circumstances. The folks at  Holy Land Trust and Sumud Freedom Camp are devoted to nonviolence and coalition-building across lines of difference.

The Sumud Freedom Camp Winter Tour is dedicated to cultivating nonviolent solidarity. We will visit sites of conflict and high tension along the porous and shifting borders between Israeli settlements and West Bank villages in the Southern Hebron Hills. I will be there during Channukah, a holiday about surviving siege, about grace and trust under military oppression, about the sacredness of shining light. It feels appropriate to me to celebrate Channukah this year, not by lighting candles and giving gifts in America, but by going to see the military occupation of Palestine, and celebrate the grace and humanity, the darkness and light on all sides of the conflict.

As I learn about the conflict from my life here in California, it's easy to oversimplify. I want to be informed, not just with my brain, but to let my heart and body sense and take in the information on the ground. What does it mean for one’s home, culture and family to be threatened by daily siege? I am going to bear witness. I am going to listen. I am going to support creative and artistic projects. I am going to learn what is happening in the home of my ancestors, in the name of my people.

The plane ticket to Israel is expensive. I am paying my way to be self-sufficient while I'm there. I want to be sure not to burden the people I'm going to witness and support.

I am going to listen. I am going to support creative and artistic projects. I am going to learn what is happening in the mythic home of my ancestors, in the name of my people.

It would mean the world to me to have your help in going. I need to raise as much of $3000 as I can before I leave in mid-December. Even if it's $20, it would mean a lot just to know that I have the support from my community, friends and family, as I make the journey.

Thank you, and expect a full report back upon my return.
