Send Grace to NICEE

Grace Foster is taking her invention to the national stage!!

After presenting her invention at school, regional, and state level competitions, Grace received an invitation  to represent Connecticut at the National Invention Convention and Entrepreneurship Expo (NICEE). This year's national convention will be held at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, MI between May 31st and June 2nd. Students and chaperones will attend the three day convention with the top inventors from across the country.

With less than a month before NICEE, we are looking for some help to offset the cost of attendance, which includes registration fees, airfare, hotel and other miscellaneous travel expenses. Any amount is appreciated to help make this young entrepreneur's dreams a reality!

About Grace:

Grace is a third grader from Ellington, CT. She attends CREC Discovery Academy, a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) magnet school in Wethersfield, CT. In addition to inventing, Grace loves to read, do gymnastics, and play soccer and basketball.

About Grace's Invention:

Inspiration struck for Grace's invention, The Handy Helper, on a family trip to New York City.  "My mom walks with a cane because of her back, and so she only has one hand free to hold the kids' hands or carry bags. It was raining in New York, and so I had to carry the umbrella for everyone, but I'm short and kept poking people in the face with it. I knew there had to be a way that my mom (or anyone really) could hold an umbrella and have their hands free!" After the initial idea struck, Grace decided to incorporate the umbrella into a backpack, both for comfort and convenience. Several versions of the idea were developed on paper and during prototyping, and The Handy Helper was born!

While Grace has a working prototype for presentation at NICEE, she is excited about the opportunity to discuss improved materials and design with industry professionals to bring her invention even further!

About NICEE:

The National Invention Convention and Entrepreneurship Expo is an event created by the STEMIE Coalition (a National Committee of experts creating an education framework to elevate youth invention and entrepreneurship education to a core part of K-12 education) for students in grades K-12 to showcase their critical-thinking skills through inventing, innovating and participating in entrepreneurial activities.
