One of Unalaska's homegrown needs our help. We have all watched Elizabeth Mears and her sister grow up into mature, beautiful, hard working young women. Elizabeth has earned the opportunity to intern with Senator Murkowski in Washington, DC this summer. We can't let limited finances keep her from this valuable experience. Let's pull together and send her out with abundance. See Elizabeth's summary in her own words:
"I am Elizabeth Mears and have grown up in Unalaska, Alaska almost all of my life. On March 25, 2019 I submitted an application that was open to all graduating seniors in Alaska. Recently, I found out I was selected through a competitive process to be a high school intern to Senator Murkowski this summer in Washington D.C. which is truly an honor. I’ll shadow staff members, attend meetings/ hearings, and will be able to explore various parts of the city (packed with tours). The program begins July 8, 2019 and ends August 2, 2019.
I will be attending the University of Alaska Southeast in the fall of 2019. I plan on majoring in business and political science has always been an interest of mine. One of my hopes for this internship is to explore other potential career opportunities. I hope to gain valuable experience and networking skills, in addition to gaining more information about how government operates.
Senator Murkowski’s high school internship will allow me to obtain more knowledge about government and provide me with experiences that will aid me in college. There is one obstacle in my way and that is that I come from a low-income family. My family consists of my Mother, my twin sister, and me. My mother is retired and we struggle to pay the bills. Currently I work two different jobs regularly to aid in paying the bills, but some months even that is not enough.
For the internship the cost of the airfare, food, housing, and a little spending money is roughly 3,700. If you would like to ask me any more questions about the internship or about me I would love to talk with you and have provided my information below.
I am a low-income, raised by an older single-mother, and adoptee, this has never prohibited me from working hard and putting my very best self forward and will only aid me in working to raise the money required to participate in this amazing experience.
This is a once in lifetime opportunity and the only way I will be able to do this is with your help and support. If you could please provide me any support it would be greatly appreciated".
