Send Eid to the Olympics

Meet Eid Aljazairli, our lovely friend from Damascus, Syria. After fleeing his home country and after a long and dangerous journey , he arrived in the UK in 2016, and eventually ended up living in a YMCA hostel in the London Borough of Waltham Forest. Late one night, whilst scrolling through social media he came across a video of US Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps. Within 2 hours of watching Phelps on YouTube, a dream was born for Eid: to become an Olympic swimmer. One could laugh this off as a far fetched fantasy, especially given the fact that Eid had never even been in a pool before arriving in the UK, but he has dedicated every waking moment to his new passion, training four hours every day as well studying at college. In only twelve months he has impressed many of the trainers who have watched him.

He has been accepted into Gators , a local swimming club, swims and trains with Dan Bullock at Swim For Tri and at the end of 2018 he won his first trophy for winning the 50m Butterfly and 100m Front Crawl for his age group. The rate at which Eid has developed is amazing and if he carries on at this pace and with the right kind of training and support he could very well make it to the Olympics in 2020 as part of the Refugee Olympic Team.

As fellow residents of Waltham Forest, we were lucky enough to meet Eid when he came to the area and he has now moved out of the YMCA and lives with a local family. He is a lovely, polite and remarkable young man and has already made us all very proud. What our friend has achieved off his own steam is so inspiring but, now with only two years to go, Eid needs an big push to achieve his dream. Swimming training doesn’t come cheap! As well as a gym membership, coaching, competing, and travel expenses, it is extremely important that an athlete is able to maintain a healthy diet, and as a refugee, Eid currently receives only £57 a week. Any money raised will be directly invested in to his future; from the cost of training within a team to making sure he is eating the correct food to fulfill his potential..
With your support, together we could help send Eid to Japan in 2020 and what an extraordinary thing that would be.
