My name is Doyin Falodun. I have recently been admitted into the Master's program at Boston University School of Public Health with a 25% ($20,520) scholarship awarded towards my tuition. This leaves me with a staggering $67,000 to cover my tuition and fees. I have attempted to get loans to cover this difference, but due to the credit crunch caused by the global health crisis, this hope was short-lived.

Being left with little or no option to get funding for my education to actualize my dream, I decided to reach out to the community at large, with the hope that someone would one day read my story and be motivated to not give up on their dream.

While in high school trying to decide on a career path, one thing that stood out for me was my passion to serve humanity and I chose to do so through dentistry. My desire to gain clinical knowledge to assist others spurred me on through the grueling years of dental school. This unparalleled focus was undoubtedly rewarded as I was awarded the best graduating student in more than one department including the Department of Community Dentistry.

Over the years, I have volunteered for several community service opportunities. My exposure to the health plights of the common man as a result of having worked in the rural and underserved communities in southern Nigeria, where access to good health care is a luxury made me realize that I want to impact the community beyond the four walls of a cooperate clinic.

From my experiences, I have learned of the various myths and misconceptions people have about health-related issues. An example is the stigmatization of women who give birth to their children through cesarean section. In many communities, women are treated as lesser beings because they did not have vaginal births. This adversely results in a high rate of maternal-child mortality in such areas.  These deaths could have been prevented if appropriate resources for education and enlightenment were channeled to such communities.

I have seen people die from preventable diseases that were caused by a simple tooth decay, which could have been nipped in the bud by the timely dental intervention. I have seen helpless children die of common malaria. I have been told by my patient that her toothache was caused by worms and so there was no need for a dental filling.

These and many more heart-wrenching incidences further motivated me to channel my passion for humanity into public health. Knowing what power lies in knowledge through good and quality education,  I have decided to transcend the barrier caused by financial constraints and still pursue this passion of mine.

My leadership potential, great work ethics, and outstanding academic performance were qualities that got me accepted into both Columbia University and Boston University, the only two universities I applied to for an MPH for fall 2020. I believe that obtaining a Master’s in Public Health will equip me with the right skills to reach my future goal.

Considering the global health crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, there is no better time to be in public health as the world needs excellent public health practitioners. I am even more convinced at this time, that I made the right call by choosing a profession in public health as this profession has historically been essential to knowing the causes of diseases and improving health outcomes across the world. This is more evident now.

My goal is to use my knowledge in public health to bring about public health policies that would benefit the minority groups in sub-Saharan Africa. I strongly desire to one day own a non-profit organization that would give quality health care for free or at a subsidized rate to the less fortunate, the vulnerable (women and children) and the elderly.
