Devan and Odin are very excited to announce that they have both been accepted to the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth. Hi! My name is Aki, and these are my kids: Devan, who’s 12 and is in the 6th grade, and Odin, who’s 9 and is in the 4th grade. My husband and I were equally excited about their acceptance to Johns Hopkins until we tallied up the tuition for all the classes they want to take. We can’t afford the tuition at Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth. This is an amazing opportunity that we want to give to our children, and we are humbly hoping that you will want to help them too.

Why does Devan want to take classes at Johns Hopkins CTY?
Devan wants to take classes through CTY because she really wants to meet students like her. We left the traditional brick and mortar school in the hopes of finding a better academic fit. Devan is currently attending an online middle school where she is allowed to work at her own pace. The online format really works for her. In addition to her regular core classes she takes a weekly choir class, band class (1st chair flute), and an individual flute lesson. While she is currently in 6th grade, she has already completed 6th grade math and she is half way through 7th grade math. She enjoys her school, but she finishes her online curriculum quickly and feels unchallenged. She is looking forward to taking her first accelerated course in April from the Johns Hopkins Young Readers’ Series. Devan desires to take The Process of Writing and Introduction to Forensics through CTY over the summer and she is really hoping to take Art Meets Science: Literature, Young Adult Readers’ Series: Dangerous Games and Rebellions, and Young Adult Readers’ Series: Monsters, Magic, and Mayhem during her 2018-2019 school year.
Why does Odin want to take classes at Johns Hopkins CTY?
Odin wants to take computer programming classes through CTY so that he can learn computer game design. Odin is currently attending an online elementary school where he is also allowed to work at his own pace. While Odin is in 4th grade has already completed 4th grade math and has moved onto 5th grade math. In addition to his core classes he takes a weekly music class, scalable game design class, and a chess class. He also competes in local chess tournaments on the weekends. After the first semester of scalable game design he was officially hooked on computer science and he is craving more. Odin desires to take Scratch Programming and Introduction to Computer Science and Engineering during the summer. Odin hopes to take Honors 5th grade math, Inventions in Engineering, and Advanced Scratch Programming during his 2018-2019 school year.
Why are we choosing to crowdfund?
Honestly, we are unsure where else to turn. I’m a forty-five-year-old woman who has suffered a debilitating heart attack. Most of our savings and all our credit cards have been used to compensate for my lack of income and medical expenses. Over the holidays, I sold most of our comic collectibles, our fancy glassware and silverware, everyone’s outgrown clothes and toys, and anything else that was not considered vital. I have literally run out of things to sell and I’m not healthy enough to work at this time. My husband has a full-time job at a small market chain and he makes just not enough to cover our mortgage, utilities, and food. We’re hoping that you can help Devan and Odin get the education that they desire and deserve!
Where will your donation go?
All the money raised will go directly towards classes at the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth. The money received will be allocated to the following classes in the order listed:
$625 – Young Readers’ Series – Quests and Challenges for Devan ($15 class registration and $30 book fees are included in the cost.) Starts April 9th.
$1015 – The Process of Writing for Devan ($15 class registration fee is included in the cost.) Application deadline is May 21st, class starts June 4th.
$815 – Introduction to Computer Science and Engineering for Odin ($15 class registration, $35 lab kit, $10 multimeter, and $50 Makey Makey classic kit fees are included in the cost.) Application deadline is June 11th, class starts June 25th.
$1065 – Introduction to Forensics for Devan ($15 class registration, $115 lab kit, $100 compound microscope, and $30 book fee are included in the cost.) Application deadline is June 11th, class starts June 25th.
$815 – Scratch Programming for Odin ($15 class registration fee is included in the cost.) This is an individually paced class that can be started at any time. Odin would like to take this course over the summer.
$595 – Art Meets Science: Literature for Devan ($15 class registration fee is included in the cost.) Application deadline early September TBA, class starts late September.
$1,565 – Honors 5th grade math for Odin ($15 class registration fee is included in the cost.) Application deadline early September TBA, class starts late September. This course is individually paced and it is approximately 6 months long.
$625 – Young Adult Readers’ Series: Dangerous Games and Rebellions for Devan ($15 class registration and $30 book fees are included in the cost.) Application deadline TBA. Devan would like to take this class during the Winter session.
$960 – Inventions in Engineering for Odin ($15 class registration, $90 Inventions course kit, and $50 material fees are included in the cost.) Application deadline TBA. Odin would like to take this class during the Winter session.
$625 – Young Adult Readers’ Series: Monsters, Magic, and Mayhem for Devan ($15 class registration and $30 book fees are included in the cost.) Application deadline TBA. Devan would like to take this class during the Spring session.
$815 – Advanced Scratch Programming for Odin ($15 class registration fee is included in the cost.) This is an individually paced class that can be started at any time. Odin would like to take this course during the Spring session.
That is a total $9,520 for 11 advanced online classes for two highly gifted children who want to learn! These classes were handpicked by both Devan and Odin reflecting their personal interests. My husband and I want to feed their passions, but we can’t do it without your help. We would be grateful for any donation of any size and/or sharing our story.
