Send Christina to Vet Camp times 3!

This is the story of Christina! She is a 14-year-old Inuk growing up in Iqaluit, Nunavut. She has always had a passion for animals. Iqaluit is located in the remote Canadian Arctic on Baffin Island where temperatures are often at -40.

Christina has been volunteering at the Iqaluit Humane Society shelter since she was nine years old. As she has grown, so have her responsibilities. She loves to visit the shelter and see the animals, but is also helpful with tasks like shoveling snow, doing dishes, laundry, etc. The humble little no-kill shelter sees about 300 dogs per year.

She has worked extremely hard and has been accepted to THREE vet camps this summer Auburn University, University of Calgary and the Atlantic Vet College at University of PEI.  We are very proud of her for getting into these highly competitive programs. The Iqaluit Humane Society will help sponsor Christina by using Aeroplan miles to fly her as flights are very pricey from the north and back. There are, however, fees on those flights. In a place where many youth struggle, the IHS wants to help raise them up for positive, learning experiences.

In 2016 as an 11-year-old, Christina got hands on experience with the amazing Chinook Project from Atlantic Veterinary College which partnered with the IHS to service Iqaluit for free with vaccines and spay/neuter surgeries. This is one of the college camps she has been accepted to this summer.

In January of 2018, the IHS brought two vets and two vet techs north for a free spay/neuter clinic and Christina again was a tremendous help. She assisted with taking in animals, observing surgeries, helping with grooming and much more.

Christina is an astute and motivated individual. On behalf of the IHS, we would love to be able to send her to all three camps so she can continue to pursue her passion and learn from the best. In order to get a job in the territory, you must be 14. She turned 14 a few days ago and is trying to get a job at the local store to help cover some of the costs. Before that, she delivered newspapers to raise money and has already saved up a few hundred dollars. She is also planning a bake sale.
