ProTeen. Cleaning Cities, Feeding Millions, Employing the future.
What if there was a solution to repurpose city waste, employ local youth, combat climate change’s most harmful effects, and distribute products that fulfill a market demand? That's where Proteen comes in. Proteen uses the black soldier fly insect to process waste into sustainable livestock feed and soil fertilizer. By providing a circular solution, we make farming more profitable throughout Africa for all stakeholders.

We need your help.
ProTeen is excited to have been selected out of 100,000 student competitors and awarded the opportunity to scale our business at the Hult Prize Accelerator. And guess what - we made top 6, meaning we will be pitching at the United Nations this Saturday! The Hult Prize, funded in part by the United Nations,  gives 1 million to the winning team to scale a social impact startup. We are moved and grateful for this opportunity - but we need your help. While we have most of our expenses covered, we are asking for 1950 euros to help fund Boby's visa, last-minute travel and accomadations.

What do we do? Proteen uses the black soldier fly insect to process waste into sustainable livestock feed and soil fertilizer.

In the next 10 years, ProTeen will be able to:

✓ employ 12,000 youth
✓ generate 760M€ in income for youth
✓ provide 560K tons of sustainable protein
✓ avert 3M tons of waste
✓ avert 25M tons of CO2
✓ …. and much more

Why do we do it?
ProTeen aims to tackle three key goals:

1) alleviate youth unemployment across Africa
2) improve local food security through sustainable protein farming
3) offer circular solutions to reduce the environmental and public health threats caused by insufficient waste management.

Where do we do it? Africa - the world's youngest continent, and more specifically Uganda, where there is currently an estimated youth unemployment rate between 64-84%.

About our Project: ProTeen empowers youth in Africa with the skills and equipment needed to become entrepreneurs through insect-farming. Cities in Africa face environmental and public health challenges due to rising demands for protein and insufficient waste management. ProTeen taps into this market opportunity: leveraging the circular economy by using black soldier flies to transform city waste into protein - all while empowering youth. Starting in Uganda, ProTeen offers a training program where youth acquire the core business and agricultural skills needed to create and sell protein as livestock feed. Youth can leverage these skills to open their own franchise business and employ other youths in their communities.  Having piloted the project on the ground in Kampala, Uganda -the world's second youngest country - we believe that ProTeen is a model that can thrive across cities in Africa.

About us: Our team is comprised of Alessandra Mantovani, Tommie Hooft, Boby Owang, and Ludivine Berouard. Three of us met during our studies of the MSc in Sustainability and Social Innovation at HEC Paris, and decided to join the competition with a common goal: empowering youth. The team and project stems from our experience on the ground. Ludivine and Boby met in Uganda while working on a sustainable coffee business. During there time working with youth, they saw an opportunity to empower farmers through circular agriculture. This is how the idea of ProTeen and empowering youth through insect farming came about.

About Hult Prize: The Hult Prize Foundation is a global organization which empowers and equips youth with a challenge in partnership with the United Nations that aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals.  Every year, the Hult Prize Competition sets a theme and received 200,000+ applications from over 160 countries. The winning teams then go on to the regional finals, ultimately competing for one of six spots at the global final at the United Nations headquarters in New York, with a chance of winning $1million of seed capital for their start-up.

In the next 10 years, ProTeen will be able to:

✓ generate 760M€ in income for youth
✓ provide 560K tons of sustainable protein
✓ avert 3M tons of waste
