Send a Songwriter to the Folk Alliance

This is a personal fundraiser for an opportunity for me to go to New Orleans to the Folk Alliance conference. The funds will be used to cover travel and lodging expenses during the conference. Because the conference is in January, and I need to purchase airline tickets and lodging now, I have very little time to raise the needed funds, hence the need for this fundraising campaign.

This is a unique opportunity for me. Having launched – or rather, resumed – my career as a singer-songwriter at the age of 65, I find myself in a very different landscape than the one I left some 40 years ago to raise a family.

I am not a beginning songwriter, having worked on songwriting for a few decades, and my work has received some recognition over the years. I have been called  “a cool dark troubadour…a modern day poet not unlike ‪Townes Van Zandt” and ”a Jedi songwriter" whose songs display “unique and exceptional lyric writing” with "a real ‪John Prine feel." ‪Lori McKenna called me "brilliant."

This year, I was the lyric winner of the 2019 NSAI/CMT Song Contest and received a Gold Award for lyrics from the Songwriters Association of Washington’s 2018 Mid-Atlantic Song Contest. I have received other First Place awards from the Unisong International Song Contest, the Austin Songwriters Group, the Dallas Songwriters Association, and I’m in the Great American Song Hall of Fame. The Nashville Songwriters Association International named me "One to Watch." You can see more awards my songs have received via the link below.

It has been a very good year for me in that respect. However, I need to translate that success into performing opportunities in order to make a living at this. And that takes some serious networking with regional and national organizations. The music industry is a relationship business. The Folk Alliance International conference that will be held in New Orleans from January 22-26, 2020, is one of the primary networking opportunities in the folk music scene. So this would be a tremendous opportunity for me to get to know the folks there.

There are other ways to raise money making music, and I am pursuing those. For example, I played a two-hour gig recently and walked away with $15 in tips. I am grateful for that, but my calculations indicate that this will not get me to my goal in time for the conference. I look at this fundraiser as a giant tip jar, and I appreciate whatever support you want to give, no matter how small. Heck, if you’d rather just go buy a song or two, you can do that instead here: https://store.cdbaby.com/Artist/MichaelRJRoth.
