New Seminary Rink

Donation protected
Background:
The Seminary rink has been around for years and a great number of players have enjoyed the rink, made friends or even learned how to play hockey behind Francis Hammond Middle School in all types of weather.  Currently there are two (2) leagues which play 6 nights a week on the rink -  DCStreethockey (DCSH) and Alexandria Roller Hockey League (ARHL).   The weather,  wear and tear over the years have created a rundown rink, with unsteady boards, old goals and a damaged almost unplayable surface area.

Enter the the National Hockey League (NHL) which created a multi-million dollar fund to build community street (no skates) and roller hockey rinks to promote the sport in NHL communities.

To that end, the Washington Capitals (Stanley Cup Champions) have secured grant money and are donating new professional boards (with players boxes & benches), fencing for the entire circumference of the rink and a sport court tile floor for the Seminary Rink.

Under the terms of their grant, the Capitals have committed the NHL grant money and since the site is located on school grounds, the Alexandria City Public Schools has secured a contractor to do the work of removing the old rink and putting in the new one.

The issue:
The contractor costs to remove the old rink and put in the one.  The new rink, floor and fencing is granted for free but the contractor costs for site preparation and installation are NOT.  Under the terms of the NHL, free rink program in other cities, the NHL team donates the rink, floor fencing, etc and the city pays for the site paving and installation.  Unfortunately, the City of Alexandria does not technically own our land and Alexandria City Public Schools can only contribute a limited amount for the installation of a hockey rink.

So we (the players) are on our own, but its is doable if we can secure the remaining costs for the contractor.  Obviously, the existing rink and fencing has to be removed and that includes the 60 - 75 steel posts that are imbedded in concrete.  The wiring for the lights will have to be removed, buried and rewired after the new boards are in place.   Once that is done a professional crew will install the new rink provided by the grant.

Many of the players have already donated money to this cause, but we are still short approximated $15,000 needed for the contractor costs to demo/remove the old rink and assist with putting in the new.

Any assistance is appreciated.
