My name is Jose Richard Aviles, I am a Social Worker, Urban Planner, and Artivista based out of South Central. The motivation behind my work is rooted in community advocacy, joy, and radical embodiment. This project started a year ago in a coffee shop in Minneapolis where I wrote the first poem, Semilla. What started as a dream is now a reality. I am trained as a dancer and choreographer and never did I imagine that I would now call myself a poet, but if there's something true is that I've always had an urge to tell my story and here it is.
Semilla was intended to be a double entendre, but a cheap pun wasn't enough to say what I really felt. Semilla is a love letter to myself, to my wounds, to harm--both received and inflicted. Following the seasons we explore lust, love, change, and pain. Semilla becomes a reflection of the seeds I've planted throughout my life and their outcomes. I hope you enjoy these poems and find a place of comfort embedded in these pages. Espero que se reconozcan a traves de leer esta palabras. Semilla es una fusion de relaciones a la lengua, materna y ajena.
That being said, I am fundraising funds for the Digital Performance of Semilla set to premiere of January 5th, 2021! Which also happens to be my 30th birthday osea mi DOBLE QUINCE! To celebrate this book, the poems, and the fact that we will survive 2020 I want this celebration to be a day of joy! A whole day of programming that will include the Entrada, El Vals, Un Baile Sorpresa, and a Zoom afterparty. The funds will all go for the production costs of putting this on, from the pre-production, production, and costs. But don't worry you get some goodies out of this too! Here are the different Tiers (but of course anything counts!)
Tier 1: $20 a signed copy of Semilla (along with a personalized letter).
Tier 2: $35 everything from tier 1 along with a 1 hr Salsa workshop for you and 10 friends and
Tier 3: $50 everything from tier 1 and 2 alongside a 45 minute session with me as a Performance Coach.
