I am 55 and have been diagnosed with "new onset" Epilepsy. My very first seizure came with no warning in early 2017. I have had 5 full on Tonic Clonic "Grand Mal" seizures in total and been hospitalized as a result of each one. My health issues began in 2013 resulting from congestive heart failure with severe complications due to a birth defect of my heart valves. I spent 6 months moving through several different hospitals as my condition declined.
When I was finally released from the hospital for the last time, I walked away at 150 lbs with artificial heart valves, the loss of 1 lung to a blood clot, and Deep Vein Thrombosis the full length of both legs, but grateful to be alive. After a long period of rehabilitation, I returned to work and as close to a normal life as can be achieved by someone in my condition. My life continued in a positive fashion, truly grateful for each sunrise and to have another day with my loving wife.
In early 20I7 I had the shattering experience of waking in a hospital ICU bed with no idea how I got there or even what hospital I was in. I am now under the care of yet another specialist and stable on anti-seizure medication. Now, having been "seizure free" for 6 months, I'm hoping to have my driving privileges restored in the near future. Having said that, I will never be without an awareness of the potential danger a seizure could pose to myself and others on the road. This is why I am asking for help to obtain a seizure "Alert / Response" Service Dog. These well trained animals have an amazing track record of signaling their owners in advance of an oncoming seizure.
It is very hard to explain how dark the impact of living with Epilepsy can be as the background of your everyday life. Knowing I have the potential to pose great danger to loved ones and all those around me is the greatest burden I have ever carried. Epilepsy and the potential of another seizure is a weight that will be with me to the end of my life. Having a service dog at my side to help carry this load would grant me more peace of mind than words have the power to convey.
I need $5000 for a dog to be selected and to receive the basic training all service dogs must have. I need an additional $5000 for the selected dog to receive the specialized training to address my specific needs. Due to my long and difficult medical history, these are costs well beyond my own means. I would be very grateful for any help toward this goal, and for the peace of mind only a service dog could provide.
