I was sailing along in life with ups n downs like everyone else..Didnt have much to complain about when out of nowhere in october 2017 comes a lump on my neck..I didnt think much of it until a few weeks later and I noticed it was bigger and had two little buddies with it..I have a friend who is a medical school professor whom i asked what it was..He said “that’s something I would get checked out right away”. And of course i go on with my life for a couple more weeks. Short time later I am at a customers house collecting leaves, as I have my own small landscape service when i thought “well these people are medical professionals and these things arent getting any smaller, maybe I could ask them what they thought”. I had been working for these people for 14 years and the lady of the house always invited me in for homemade vegetable soup each year when I did the leaves..Sure enough I’m at her table for soup and I asked her to examine the lumps..she did and long story short she calls me at 06:30 the very next morning and said “steve I’m sorry to call you this early but I couldn’t wait...John ( her husband the doctor) said you need to go to the hospital now”..I am a veteran of the navy and already had a primary care doctor at newburg VA clinic in louisville..At 08:00 I called them and told them what was going on..I was told to “get in here” so i did..They drew several vials of blood and ordered a CT scan of my neck that same day, and much to my surprise within 48 hours i got a call from my doctor asking me to come in and  bring a family member if I would like to go over the results..She hd my full attention so I said “no I’m ok just tell me”..she said highly suspicious of cancer...I am 46 yrs old and wasnt ready for that news...This was in november 2017..by Jan 02 2018 after biopsy and other tests I was diagnosed with stage 4 throat cancer..I was told we had to move fast..my mother and younger brother were with me in the oncologist’s office when I got the news..I had a feeding tube put in, a port for direct access to a vein or artery for chemo and blood work and started the first of 35 radiation treatments and the first chemo before I could process it all..I was scheduled for 6-7 erbitux (chemo) weekly treatments..If there’s a devil he lives in a bag of chemo..they had to stop chemo after the 4th one because my body could handle no more..the radiation continued and my last one of 35 is tomorrow 03/15/18...I was genuinely hoping to be back on my mower working full speed in the sun and mulching flower beds and planting like a mad man like I always do, but to my disappointment recovery is just going to take a little while..I had applied for assistance but was told i had to be evicted already to be eligible for benefits..I have been overwhelmed with kindness from friends and family who have visited and stayed with me...so many people have brought me soups and what they could to help and I am forever changed by the love I have been shown..I have a new love and respect for my mother who has never left my side and genuine love for my uncle who came from texas for a week at a critical time when I needed someone the most..I have never been one to ask for a hand out. Matter of fact I don’t feel very good about doing this whole go fund me thing, but i have learned many things about who my friends are and aren't and a great deal about myself through this experience that isnt over by any means..I am more than willing to work, I always have been..This is just going to take a little while to get back the 45 pounds i have lost which i kinda need to push my wheelbarrow and do the backbreaking labor which I honestly love..Its all I know..It’s what I love to do..The money will be used to subsodize my efforts to work as hard as possible..I have the normal bills ...rent home and shop. work truck payment and insurance on it and business..utilities and cell phone..3k a month is about what it takes to operate my life..I was shooting for 3 months expenses or so  also allowing for fees from “go fund me”..anything from $1 to just maybe share my story somehow would be greatly appreciated and not a wasted effort on your part as I will work as hard as my body will allow me to get back to the man I was physically..Mentally and spiritually I am miles ahead of the man I was last fall..If you haven’t fallen asleep yet thank you for reading this..
