Seeds of Hope - Phase II Project

Our Nursery School Page

Seed of Hope Nursery School is the result of a lot of passion in the community of Mphomwa to empower kids and get better educational outcomes. I was fortunate during my time living in the village, located near the city of Kasungu in Malawi, to find partners and community members eager to improve the lives of the little ones. Malawi is a developing country and faces many challenges, not the least of which is a heavily over-populated and under-funded school system. Children too young to go to school are often left largely to their own devices as their parents are busy with the necessary work of the day which they need to survive.
Seed of Hope is meant to fill two major needs of the community. One, it gives little ones who are too young to start primary school a safe and nurturing place to have fun, learn, and get a little food in their tummies. Second, it has already shown in it's first few years of operation that it gives kids the foundation they sorely need in order to get a step up in the challenging Malawian primary school system. One of our first class of "graduates" has already risen to the top of her class at Kasasanya, the local primary school.
The scope the current projects is to finish the construction of a dedicated building for the nursery school. Previously classes had been held in a small house loaned to the school by the Chief of Mphomwa. This was far too small to meet our needs, and not ideally set up for the learning activities and games our caregivers provide. Look at our progress pictures, and  you'll see that in an earlier fundraiser we successfully got walls, floors, and a roof installed. This fundraiser is for flooring, doors, windows, and other finishing needs to get the building ready for our kids this fall (which is Malawian spring). A detailed budget prepared by my excellent counterpart in Mphomwa, Mr. Nachiye, will be included on this site. Once the money is collected, I wire it over to Mr. Nachiye who deposits it in the Nursery School's account. From there it is dispersed as needed for the project and our day-to-day expenses of materials, especially the high nutrition porridge we serve to the kids every day.
One factor that works enormously in our favor funding in the US is the power of the US dollar. Each dollar is worth over 700 Malawi Kwacha, and that's enough for a decent meal in Kasungu. Know that your donations, and even the humble sums that have been raised, have huge impact in these under-served and impoverished regions. The smallest donation of only a few dollars is a lot of help in creating a safer, better place for the kids today, and a huge boost up towards a better future!
