ESRA Spaceport America Cup 2018

Donation protected
SEDS-ASU Rocketry Division is a student organization at Arizona State University. Our team is currently designing and building a rocket for an international competition, Spaceport America Cup, hosted by the Experimental Sounding Rocket Association and held in Spaceport America, New Mexico in early June ’18. Our 2018 SEDS-ASU Rocketry Division is comprised of six student competition leads, 43 student members and a mentor. We each bring a different specialty to the table to complete the rocket build (Astrophysics, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering and more). Our mentor for this competition is a Honeywell Aerospace Engineer Jonathan Jennings, who also has assisted in past competitions to oversee rocket design for safety and understanding. Speaking of past competitions, our team is currently the #2 ranked team in the nation for the SEDS-USA University Student Rocketry Competition.

Over the past three months, we have been meeting multiple times during the week and every Saturday. We have all been working diligently on our design to create a unique rocket that will give us an edge over the competition this June. Two weeks ago, we finalized our design with our mentor to ensure it met competition safety regulations and to sort through any potential design errors.

Now that our design phase is complete, we are moving on towards a testing and build phase. This is where we need help and why we are reaching out to you, GoFundMe. There are several parts we will need to buy for this rocket, and we have already purchased some with our own money to get a head start. We have found ourselves at a point where we can no longer fund this project on our own budget.

By becoming a sponsor, you are putting money into the community and investing in our education and the education of others as we pass our increasing knowledge down to those who will join us later. We have also started planning for our ASU chapter to host a local rocketry competition in the Phoenix valley area high schools. Our chapter would branch out into each high school to educate those students who show an interest in rocketry. Your relationship with us will foster a positive community image through educational outreach.

This project is also advantageous because this rocket is dedicated to Veterans by a Veteran-led student organization. This Freedom Rocket, which is 10ft tall and houses a 3ft long solid fuel motor, is going to be hitting an altitude of 10,000ft and traveling at Mach 0.9. The entire body and fins will be carbon fiber, wrapped and professionally painted with those wonderful Red, White and Blues. Our 8.8lb payload will be a reaction wheel as a roll control system and various data sensing electronics for flight performance feedback. She will be carrying your name or logo on her back while achieving new heights and traveling at a speed nearly breaking the sound barrier. We will be partnering with the Arizona State University Pat Tillman Veteran Center; they support one of the Nation’s largest Veteran Student populations and are associated with a number of other great Veteran Organizations. Our team will also be partnering with other well-known and reputable Veteran Non-Profit Organizations such as Team Overland and Wings for Warriors. We also have just partnered with ASU New Space which will help foster connections between us and a number of Space Industries. This is your opportunity to jump on board with the most patriotic rocket at this year’s Spaceport America Cup.

We have priced all the supplies we need in an Excel worksheet and planned our phases properly for this to run as smoothly as possible. Our first progress report has been completed and submitted on January 26th. Now we would like to begin constructing our carbon fiber body tubes and testing the rocket’s structural integrity as well as the internal components housed within. We have put a lot of ourselves into this and would love for our work to come to fruition with your help.

We are looking for an individual, company, or organization that would provide the total/partial cost of the rocket that we intend to build to win this competition. Our total cost for this competition is $15,000 after a 25% price adjustment for tax, shipping, and unexpected purchases. As the cost of this rocket sounds expensive, our team has come together to find the most cost-effective way to build this rocket. Some of the other teams that we will be competing against (MIT, Embry Riddle, etc.) have budgets that exceed ours by $35,000. We have found that by doing a lot of the work ourselves we can decrease the overall cost of this rocket. Instead of purchasing ready-to-go parts, we will be doing the following on our own: carbon fiber wrapping body tubes, electronics, PCB printing, programming electronics, ejection charges, fins, couplers and nose cone. Not only are we reducing the budget by completing these tasks on our own, but we are learning valuable skills that will benefit our future.

To show our appreciation of your support, we have included donor perks. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us at any time. Thank you for taking the time to review this opportunity. We look forward to collaborating on an amazing project together.
