In December 2017, Sean Hughes was diagnosed with Stage 2/3 pancreatic cancer. His tumor is entwined with blood vessels and it is currently inoperable making it difficult for his oncologist to pinpoint the exact stage. Because of this extremely painful diagnosis, the related chemotherapy and the intense side effects, he is unable to work and is currently relying on his diminishing amount of sick and personal leave. His wife, Janel, is taking care of Sean around the clock as well as their three beautiful children, a son, age 16, (who is severely disabled due to a stroke before birth causing him to be paralyzed on one side, immobile, legally blind, tube-fed and completely dependent on his parents), and two healthy and loving daughters ages 11 and 9.

Sean is on a chemotherapy regime every 2 weeks and recently finished his first four month round that began in January. His first post chemo CAT scan showed no changes to the tumor—that’s the good and bad news. It hasn’t grown and is still inoperable.

For those friends and family members that know Sean, they know that for him to allow his story to be shared is not easy. He is a proud husband and father who has done everything in his power to make a great life for his family without seeking any outside attention and has worked tirelessly to do so. To provide some background, in mid-2016, the Hughes family relocated to the Atlanta area from the Boston area for Sean’s federal law enforcement job after living there for seventeen years. They have no immediate family nearby and have been blessed to have some amazing family, neighbors and friends helping out especially with their son who needs to be lifted in and out of his bed and wheelchair, changed, washed, dressed, and tube-fed.

Sean and Janel are attending appointment after appointment, bi-weekly chemo that takes 8 hours to administer at a local cancer center plus an at home chemo pump activated for an additional 48 hours, extended recovery times from the chemo side effects and now medical bills arrive daily. Insurance is a wonderful benefit but treatment is not fully covered. This fundraiser is being established to assist with medical costs, insurance bills and other expenses resulting from pancreatic cancer.

At some point in our lives, all of us have been affected by cancer—either a personal battle or helping a loved one with the disease. Besides the physical and emotional tolls, fighting cancer can be an enormous financial burden. Our hope is that this GoFundMe page can provide the financial support Sean and his family need during this incredible difficult time. It will also be a place that makes it easy for family and friends to rally support for Sean and his family. Words of encouragement mean the world to anyone fighting any disease and this site will provide that opportunity during Sean and the family’s journey.

We sincerely appreciate any assistance of help that we receive.

With grateful and thankful hearts,

The Hughes Family
