Support Sea Turtle Research Assistants!

Help me support sea turtle research assistants!

My Masters research is studying the impact of microbes on sea turtle hatching success at Ostional, Costa Rica. Here, olive ridley sea turtles nest in large aggregations estimated at up to 500,000 females nesting for as many as seven consecutive days. Despite the abundance of nesting females, the low hatching success at this beach is of concern for the international conservation of the species. My research aims to understand why the hatching success is so low at Ostional and to determine management strategies that can be applied to improve hatching success.

But I can't do this alone! My research requires a lot of help and my current funding does not cover the cost of their expenses and stipends. This fundraiser will cover the expenses to hire local research assistants to get involved in my research. Integrating the local community is just as important to sea turtle conservation and scientific research as my results will be.
*Please note that the undergraduate student I was also hoping to fund is no longer able to participate. Therefore, if we raise enough money, I will hire an additional local assistant!

Additionally, I am in desperate need of some temperature dataloggers to collect nest temperature data for all of my study nests. These are expensive and I need at least 90 to provide a large enough sample size to collect adequate data. These data are important in monitoring nest temperatures to help us understand why hatching success is reduced at Ostional. I am doing my best to fix old dataloggers and borrow some from other researchers, but the rest will be paid for with the additional funds raised here.

Your donation is greatly appreciated and will help provide an amazing opportunity for these assistants. Below is a breakdown of how the funds will be used:
*Please note that changes have been made since the undergraduate student is no longer able to participate.
Monthly pay for local assistant = $620 x 3 months x up to 2 assistants
Cost of fixing old datalogger = $34 each
New datalogger = $50 each
(a total of 90 dataloggers are needed)

Your donation is greatly appreciated and will help provide an amazing opportunity for these assistants. Our total goal is $5,000 but we don't need to reach this goal to make a difference: every $34 covers the cost of fixing an old datalogger, every $50 covers the cost of a new datalogger, and every $620 covers a months worth of pay!

Reward levels offer you a photography print of your choice as a token of appreciation (hatchling, nesting female, sea turtle, or arribada).
