SOFIA’S WISH 2 DANCE
Sofia, our lovely daughter is 4 years old and comes from Raheny in Dublin. Sofia is an amazing little fighter, always willing to go the extra mile, topped with a beautiful smile and insists on saying “hi” to everyone she meets on the street and wants to play and be friends with every boy and girl she meets.
We are currently on a cancellation list with St Louis Children's Hospital for SDR (Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy) , which may take up to a year. But could be much sooner, so we are keen to raise funds and really need your support.
Sofia was diagnosed last year with Cerebral Palsy which mainly affects her legs and her balance. She suffers with tightness and discomfort which is caused by the spasticity in her legs. She wears splints on her feet and legs for support and uses a walker when out and about but is limited to short distances. Sofia needs constant physio, to control the spasticity and strengthen up areas like her legs and core.
A few months ago, we found out that Sofia may be a candidate for SDR , we could not help but immediately get excited with the thoughts of giving our daughter a fighting chance in life.
We applied to St Louis Children’s Hospital in the US where world-renowned surgeon Dr. T. S. Park for SDR is based and were delighted to hear that our little Sofia is a perfect candidate. With this surgery, Dr Parks believes Sofia will be able to walk independently and the spasticity that gives Sofia that tightness, discomfort and forces her feet to be constantly on her tippy toes will be greatly reduced.
At present, SDR (Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy) is the only surgical procedure that can provide permanent reduction of spasticity in Cerebral Palsy. A procedure not available in Ireland. Our initial thoughts on the surgery were a mix of fear and hope, as it is such a major spinal surgery, but looking into the procedure and speaking to other families that have gone through the process and especially seeing the children that have had their lives improved both physically and emotionally has made us come to where we find ourselves now.
Sofia's dreams are simple, to dance and chase her twin sister Kate around. Our job is to give Sofia the best possible chance of this and give her every opportunity to live a happy and independent life.
The money raised will go towards the cost of surgery in the US, intensive pre and post Op Physio and travel.
