Support Makers and Mentors!
We're raising funds to provide scholarships for the next generation of makers and mentors in VT.Sculpture School is a nonprofit art school for kids based at Knoll Farm in Fayston, VT. We offer a range of hands-on learning programs including afterschool classes, full-day sessions for homeschoolers, and week-long summer camps. Our mission is to inspire kids to be fearless, confident, and curious explorers of ideas.

Allocation of Funds

Our fall 2019 campaign will help support two key areas of our programming in 2020:

1.) Teen Mentorships ($2,520) – Teen mentors earn $12/hr for their participation as teaching assistants and collaborators in our afterschool programs. A typical 7 week program provides a stipend of $252 (21 total hours). Raising $2,520 will help create 10 positions for local high school students in our 2020 programs.

2.) Scholarships ($2,500) – These funds will go towards providing full-tuition scholarships for families facing financial hardship. Families can apply for scholarships on our website. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis beginning in January 2020.

About our Teen Mentors

Peer-to-peer learning is at the heart of the Sculpture School experience. Having teenagers in our programs helps reinforce a fun and safe learning environment. Many of the high school students who participate as mentors were Sculpture School students in elementary school. They return to share knowledge and skills with their younger peers and earn an hourly stipend for their hard work and commitment.
The teen mentorship program strengthens social bonds between generations while providing meaningful and engaging employment opportunities for local young people. It's empowering for young mentors to become leaders and develop technical and social skills, and it is formative for children to have teenage role models.

More about Sculpture School

Sculpture School was sparked by the idea that creativity is best cultivated when children pursue projects based on their own passions and curiosities. This idea originally manifested as an afterschool program in September 2014. Eight local youth underwent tool safety trainings and were given salvaged building materials and access to a workspace. They had freedom to express their creativity led by their own curiosities and intuition. What emerged were life-size figurative sculptures, wood structures, and an overpowering sense of pride and confidence within the group. Since that time, we have established as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, and continued experimenting with small group engagements while exploring new methods of fusing creativity with engineering.
Our vision is to deepen our impact in our local Mad River Valley community by creating experiences that will energize the next generation to carve out a place in the world as makers, fixers, do-ers and innovators. The hands-on, collaborative programs of Sculpture School are designed to prompt kids to approach the world with a newfound sense of curiosity and courage, understanding that no problem is so big that it can't be solved with imagination and teamwork. We focus on what engages and matters to kids themselves, and we trust them – not only with power tools, but with larger-than-life building projects.
