Scuba Diving N Wounded Vets

Tax deductible
Wounded Heroes of America and Dive N' Surf are working together to create a Scuba Diving Club that allows the mind and bodies of our veterans to stay active; while strengthening the Fellowship among them.

The goal is USD 10,000 to pay for the equipment & gear, lessons, and certification our Wounded Heroes need to dive in deep waters.  Your support allows vets from WHOA Scuba Diving Club to enjoy this activity together.

$1, $5, $10 go a long way when we join forces; together we can make a difference.

The benefits of scuba diving for our wounded heroes are many.  This article by DeeperBlue.com  talks about the general value of Scuba Diving.

Deptherapy , a UK-based niche charity offering support to military veterans who have experienced life-changing injuries, funded empirical research on Scuba Diving that showed:

"Scuba diving has the potential to benefit injured veterans due the requirement of complete focus and the feeling of weightlessness when underwater." -- Morgan, Sinclair, Tan, Thomas, and Castle for Deptherapy, UK

From all of us at Wounded Heroes of America, welcome to our Scuba Diving Club for our combat wounded vets.

For years now, we’ve had our vets attend sporting events organized by other foundations and/or the VA itself, and they do amazing things. From skiing to fishing, from blind to amputees, vets engage in a wide range of activities.

Oftentimes, the VA will spend thousands of dollars to give the wounded veterans breaks from their daily struggles and a brief weekend of fellowship, but unfortunately, these events are few and far between.  We at WHOA make fellowship an integral part of our operation and one of the pillars of our foundation.

In May 2018, we were invited to a surf contest organized by the Redondo Beach Police Department. Of course, none of our vets knew anything about surfing, but that proved to be only a minor inconvenience. We had a terrific time, and we made a lot of new friends. One of the vets even walked away with a trophy—for being on the right team at the right time.

In the process we met Chris and Thomas—the managers of Dive N Surf, one of the oldest dive shops in the area—and immediately became friends. They graciously supplied our vets with equipment for our day of surfing, and they joined us at our annual golf tournament. From there, the friendship continued.  One day, Chris planted the idea that we should get our guys on the water, either surfing or diving. He said that water was very therapeutic, and we knew we had the best playground in our backyard: the Pacific Ocean.

We talked with some of our vets about the possibilities, and they loved the idea of starting a scuba diving club. We started by getting in the pool, just to get used to the equipment and to breathing underwater, and everyone gave it a green light.

The reality is: the ocean is our backyard. Water sports are therapeutic, and they’re something we can easily incorporate into what we’re already doing to foster fellowship among our vets and our community. Best of all, we have friends who are eager to help make this happen, but of course, we need funding.

We started a GoFundMe campaign to generate the seed money for our Scuba Diving Club, and we’re asking you to please help us get this program off the ground. The vets love the idea of adding scuba diving to our activities.
